Favourite Sailing Music?

Middle of the Night Watch, all alone with a steady breeze and an easy motion, no moon, lots of stars and the occasional sounds of dolphins teasing the flying fish.

What is the best musical accompaniment or song that would lift your spirits even higher and remind you of how incredibly lucky we sailors are?

Great choice from MarkJ with the Split Enz song I'd forgotten all about.

If feeling a little melancholy or reflective, for me it would be Dire Straits 'Why Worry'.

If upbeat and looking forward to another gorgeous day, probably ELO's 'Mr Blue Sky'.

This is such a personal question as we have such varied (I hape) taste in music. Has your taste in music changed over the years? Mine has.

I never was much into pop or rock music, but it's hard not to know all the classics. You hear them everywhere.

Some of favs when sailing are:

Enya
UB40
Mighty Sparrow
Carly Simon

But my real favs are operas, Puccini, Verdi, Donezetti, Bellini, Mozart. I discovered opera, very late in life, but find it very appealing and it can be inspiring, and beautiful. And it really needs your attention.

My wife loves Illare, and I mostly listen to Hawaiian music. I am thinking I am on a Hawaiian catamaran under the stars exploring the world of Polynesia hundreds of years ago......... I guess being Hawaiian will do that to a fella....LOLOLOLOL

Orinoco flow by Enya gets my sailing juices flowing and that version of Over the Rainbow brought tears to my eyes....beautiful! never heard it before

You had to specify two conditions which make it so I don't have a favorite at that point.


If there were a moon, I'd say Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon. If it were day time, I'd say Blue, by Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts.

I'd have to guess, no moon, calm night, smooth sailing. Has to be something classical. Blue Danube maybe, or Pachelbel's Canon. Although now because of this,

I have ripped over 1000 CD's to a hard drive....we have over 90 days of continuous music to listen to before we have to repeat a song.....I am SURE we can find several delights for late night listening.....

You know what's weird about that though...

We had a music server at the company I owned in Manhattan. We had the personal collections of 16+ people all onto this massive server we could all listen to at work. (read over 6 mos of music with no repeats 24/7)

The funny part is you just couldn't ever figure out what to listen to.

Or, if you put it on random, you'd end up with some long string of Frank Zappa songs just randomly. Very strange thing to have *too much* music.

If you haven't heard yet, Robt Plant and Alison Krauss have done an album together...it's fantastic and very diff from anything they've done before.
It's called 'Raising Sand'.
