Once again it all comes down to the budget... I have a $125 media player. I wish I could afford to have a couple poles, or Czechs or Swedes

Poles are great for cleaning the mess up afterwards, nearly immune to alcohol, and happily survive on a diet of sandwiches

Same here. When I'm not sailing the boat, or doing the nav and planning for the next day's passage, I'm fixing the boat. Then, when cruising I do like to get off the boat from time to time and actually see some of the cool places we sailed so long to get to. Not much time for "entertainment".

Nevertheless, for some reason, people seem to really like to watch movies on board, so I have a small LCD TV stowed in a locker and a tiny zone-free DVD player, which we set up on the saloon table from time to time, especially at anchor after the sun goes down. It's practically the only time I get to see movies - don't go the cinema and don't watch them at home.

My ex wife was the total opposite of that, should have married a Pole.

LED projectors start at under 200 dollars on Amazon. at that price seems like a great deal. The bulbs last 30,000 hours.

Re: Entertainment

I'm of the older, reading for entertainment set, BUT when our 11 yo grandson is aboard he likes a little media ...

From what I've been reading the past several years, it seems that most cruisers get their entertainment by finding a WIFI hot spot and posting on this board...

Well the thing is after the sailing for the day, the cooking, the watching of sunset and sum rises, I do so enjoy a good DVD and I have tons of sailing movies and books that are about sailing.

Also I like listening to music and having my favorite tunes singing out as I cruise certainly beats having silence.

Entertainment systems can use a lot of power, but with a bit of careful shopping you can reduce the consumption significantly.

We watch movies on a 21.5 inch led monitor powered directly from 12v. A notebook with USB hard drive and some external speakers supplies the information.
The total power is about 2.3A.

Re: Entertainment

lol, yeah I forgot to include the 32" hdtv which is about 6 amps all by itself. I really tried to get one that was DC powered with a brick. I only found one and didn't buy it because it looked terrible. So I gave up and decided to power it via 120.

Re: Entertainment

We started cruising not to run away from the world but to get out into it! For us, part of that means being "plugged in" as much as we ever were on land. We have a TV, two laptops, two tablet computers and a built in gaming PC (which we can only use on shore power or by running a generator). Oh, and an Ipod and stereo system. That's not to say that we dont like switching everything off and enjoying the peace and quiet of nature too. Its just not an either or scenario for us. Our boat is our home and is very simple in many ways - but communications and media devices is not one of them!

As someone said earlier, its horses for courses and depends on the type of cruising life you want. We want one that can be connected to the world if want it to be.
