Eau Canada

Why are Canadians called hosers? Is this an insult or just a good natured nickname?

Re: Eau Canada

If you Google Hoser you will get a variety of explanations, then decide which one you like.

It's good a good natured comment made popular by Bob and Doug Mackenzie,,,"The great white north" movie called strange brew..

Re: Eau Canada

It is a very Canadian male thing and it is a insult of sorts and an anachronism but at the same time an endearment. I don't hear it much any more but when I was a teenager it was an insult amongst friends. A hoser was the fellow who watered the ice rink in the days before zambonis. To make it worse a hoser was usually of the species rink rat, since they hung out at the rink all day.

Saturday night and your friend is over to watch the game you say, "Beer's in the fridge, you hoser, eh?" The eh was mandatory turning what appears to be a statement of fact into a question indicating it was really an offer. Male bonding.

Re: Eau Canada

When i was in my teens growing up in British Columbia,,we would call each other hoser all the time,,,and sometimes yell it out of the car window at others as an insult,,so i guess it depends on which context it was being used in,,,kinda like good naturedly calling your friend an Ass*ole ...we didnt mind as long as ther was a stubby in it for us..hahahah

Re: Eau Canada

All the above are good answers... among friends, it was said good naturedly, as in, "Don't be such a hoser", and yes it could be an insult.

It has fallen out of use, probably because we all grew up.

BTW, Second City which the McKenzie brothers are depicted in was originally filmed in my home town, Edmonton. Even saw John Candy at events once in a while.

Re: Eau Canada

As others have said, it's a bit dated but I think it will bring a smile to the face of any Canadian who remembers Bob & Doug ... (those born before say 1975?)
