E-Readers In Foreign Ports ?

I have been considering getting an e-reader (Kindle or Nook or ...) but wonder about their usefullness when sailing internationally. Can you get WiFi access in most Caribean and European ports? Any other considerations I should know about before purchasing.

Re: E-Readers in foreign ports?

I down loaded books on my Kindle via WiFi in New Zealand. No problems but made connection from a friends land based WiFi router.

The Amazon web site has locations of where you can connect and download without network charges.

Get the 3G version it gives you free access to a huge range of country 3G networks without having to take out individual subscriptions. There no roaming charged for the kindle 3G

Re: E-Readers in Foreign Ports ?

I have a Kindle.

I use the Whispernet service that Kindle offers for free if you buy the Kindle that has it.

Not only could I get books at no charge I was also able to check email and Facebook!! All for free.

I used the whole time from the Caribbean to Maine. A few different countries!

Re: E-Readers in Foreign Ports ?

I have Kindle and am in Indonesia ... I don't/can't use the whispernet, but it's easy to buy a book via internet and then download to my computer, and then transfer to Kindle ... takes maybe 30 seconds ... also, there's a PC version of Kindle so can read on my laptop if someone else is using my Kindle on board.

Bottom line, if you have access to internet in a cafe or wi-fi, you're all set no matter where you are in the world
