Re: Dumbells & Barbells on a boat ?

I have a set of dumbbells in the boat.

Regular boat chores are tiring and a great workout, but they don't actually build muscle in the sense of having a good looking body.

You need actual weights, and heavy ones, for that.

The pitch and roll of the boat makes the workout much more difficult than on land.

Re: Dumbells & Barbells on a boat ?

I have this book called "convict conditioning" its a really great book about how people built strength/muscle with just body weight. I wanted weights just as a supplement. ...i love to change exercises up.

Kayaking as a dingy....that sounds like 1 hell of a workout. Im trying to research about a pedal battery generator for my Bavaria 44 now lol. If anyone knows a sailer with this mounted. ..i think its a great idea.

What somebody mention earlyer only a dedicated/proffesional body builder can appreciate the need to workout at sea. otherwise use your body your boat and sea as a "gim".

Actually, you do not need heavy weights to have a good body. That's old school thinking. Why carry around too much muscle?

Try some of these poses and see if you don't feel like you have had one hell of a workout:

Combine that with hiking, rowing, and things you do on the boat and you should be fine......along with a good diet

Re: Dumbells & Barbells on a boat ?

I think dumbells on a boat is an excellent idea. I don't have a bench and need that for chest press and bench flys, dumbell sit-ups etc. But if u have a bench then fine.

I find a gym in every port and go daily. But at sea the dumbells would be good.

Another good bit about doing free weights at sea is the rock and roll of the boat will add to the compound nature of each exercise.

Research shows as we get older resistance training is pretty vital. But at gyms you mainly see younger people. Go figure. No wonder nursing homes are full.

Depends on the gym. Both of the gyms where I have been a member were filled with retired people. I was often one of the younger people working out. The retired folks had time to get into shape and stay that way. Scary though how many of them where in bad, bad shape trying to recover from health issues. Use to see one guy that was in really bad shape but he sure was making an effort. I would go the gym on different days of the weeks and he would always seem to be there.

The big motivator was seeing the guys with the big long scars on their chests. I did NOT want one of those...

Dan

I would be concerned about dropping something heavy enough and hard enough to cause delamination or other serious damage. Or having a visitor (grandchild?) doing same.

Dropping weights is an affectation. Showing off to the others in the gym. To drop weights on your own boat is something I would encourage as it would sort put the normal people from the raging idiots

A 2 litre bottle holds 2kg of water.

Even I can twirl that around my left ear like a cheerleaders bra.

That's why I switched to a plant-based whole food diet.

This is where aerobic exercise comes in.

Exercises like hiking, rowing a kayak for a few miles, running etc........where you can get your heart beat up and keep it there for 30 minutes to an hour or so.

Re: Dumbells & Barbells on a boat ?

Check out www.zerotocruising.com. They used to run a gym before cruising and now use TRX to stay in great shape. They have a few exercise videos somewhere on their site.

Great people too.

I agree but as we get older we need resistance training too. That's weight lifting. Its not for heart but muscle.

Great article: http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fit...er-adults.aspx

Medical research: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3117172/

From the research paper:
Quote:
Improving the rate of force development requires training at a higher intensity (above 85%), in the elderly just as in younger persons.
You can't do that with coke bottles full of water!
