Re: Drone Questions

[QUOTE=tomfl;2232273]

I have pre ordered a Mavic and am very close to the front of the waiting list but I am not expecting it before the first of November at best. If you order now you may not get delivery till December at best. Lots of online discussion about them not being here till after the first of the year unless you ordered early. Keep in mind that both the Phantom and Mavic are dji products and some folks advise to buy from an official dji vendor to avoid any warranty issues. Ask the vendor before you buy.

I have a Splash as well and have been very unhappy with it.

-----

I'm also thinking of placing an order for a Mavic, looks ideal for the small confines of a boat, as far as storage goes. But also an amazing amount of technology in such a small package.

I've thought about getting a Splash for a while but your comment above is quite typical from other owners from what I've seen.

One of main concerns with the Mavic is the lack of landing gear to be able to catch it, which is probably easier than trying to land it on a moving boat.

On a side note, I checked with my insurance and they confirmed the drone will be covered under personal effects if flown from the boat 😀

I was able to modify my Splash by adding copper foil to help reduce interference and relocate some of the power wires which made it easier to fly; but I would not recommend it for anyone who is just starting. The Splash does have an advantage of image quality over the H20 platforms due to how the gimbal is positioned.

I agree the Mavic is a great option for lots of situations. The camera lens is faster and narrower than the GoPro and other dji stuff. The result is a shallower depth of field; so much so that the Mavic is not fixed focus. This means it is quite easy to capture out of focus images unless you are careful.

We often see threads at CF about the best anchor or best boat. If the truth be known unless one knows what something is to be used for it is hard to say one thing is better than another; be it an anchor or a UAS.

I am so glad they still allow skeet shooting in Canadian PNW from your boat....

Just hate the intrusion of drones into public places where you bring your private home.

Here is the Skeet Shooting Drone that shoots back, eh? Thousands of Afghani's know it works.

Seriously, I would like to hear from Mavic owners, and their vessel originated flights.

Re: Drone Questions

I've sold a few Splash Drones to fishing boats and they seem pretty happy with them. I think I'm going to buy one for myself.

If you're interested, I'd love to quote you on one.

Re: Drone Questions

FYI--DJI has refurbished Phantom 3 standards for $329, no tax, no shipping. Same warranty as brand new, and thoroughly checked. According to their website, these are items that were returned within 7 days.

Mine should be here late this week. Much easier to crash and splash $329 than $1000.

Re: Drone Questions

Check those Phantom "deals" carefully. Last time I saw an unbelievable deal offered it turned out to be the Phantom only. No camera. No controller. No battery... Maybe OK if you already have an active rig and need a spare airframe. Not a good deal for a beginner.

I've been flying mine off the boat for about a month now. No problem when the boat is stationary. Quite a challenge for this novice pilot when the boat is under way. Take off is easy but landing under way is always a little nerve wracking. The Mavic would be a little dicey to catch as it does not have the large landing gear of the Phantoms. Not saying it can't be done, but you have to reach up between the blades to grab the body and my wife is having none of it, so I land mine on the trampoline. I managed to crash into my rigging the first time as I had left the obstacle avoidance feature activated. As the drone was descending onto the tramp it sensed the stays on my seagull striker and stopped, as it is supposed to. Unfortunately the boat was moving and the cap shroud clipped the drone before I could avoid it. Fortunately, the drone crashed into the lifelines and was undamaged. Now, when flying off the boat, I always deactivate the obstacle avoidance before landing.

Re: Drone Questions

About two months ago we attended boot dusseldorf and came across this product

Waterproof Drone Pioneer - SWELLPRO

We have decided to purchase one as it is waterproof. Plenty of our phantoms have ended up on the water whilst filming our clients yachts.

Re: Drone Questions

Anyone ever rig up a section of volleyball netting as a crash barrier, like is done on aircraft carriers for emergencies?
