Digital Movies & Books

So much has changed over the years reguarding movies and books aboard.

Five years go it was hard bound books with lending libraries at every port. Now its Kindle and the like...

As far as moives, it was DVD's and now the new thing is digital movies...

So the question for cruisers outside the USA:

WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES FOR DIGITAL BOOKS AND MOVIES?

Thanks in advance!

OK Mark...

Yes we trade with other cruisers also, but I understand there are web sites, which share free or low cost movies and books.

As you now without a USA IP address, most if not all material is unavailable to us.

Re: Digital Movies & Books

I've never run across an IP address problem outside the US, other than Hulu and Youtube, which I don't use anyway. The IP address problem is easily solved by using a proxy server.

The Gutenberg project website has free ebooks that are past copyright protection. There are several other small publishing houses that provide free ebooks for certain authors in the hopes that you will buy more of them - for example: Baen Books Science Fiction & Fantasy - Home Page

I don't know of any free movie sites that are legal. All of the illegal ones seem to work fine with any IP address.

Of course, Amazon, etc work fine outside the US if you want to purchase from them.

But by far, our largest source of digital movies and ebooks is other cruisers.

There is a large underground of media swappers. Many cruisers have lots of time and little money so it goes. Most guys I have seen have some sort of laptop setup for watching movies. It is not unusual to have a dinner party, bring your terrabyte external drive so the host can download all your stuff. You may leave with the hosts drive and a promise to pick it up the next day.

For legal stuff the iPad has become my go to tool. I have the component video cable and plug straight into most modern tv sets.

Netflix - needs good to excellent WiFi. $7.99 a month and all the media you could ever watch. Outside the US you need a vpn solution.

ITunes - rent movies or selected tv shows. Buy movies or most tv shows. The advantage is you can subscribe to the absolute latest seasons of most tv shows. You can store purchased and rented movies on the devices for later viewing. And becuase it is not streaming it is a good option for anchorages with weak WiFi. We decided what movie to watch that night. Starter the d/l - did our afternoon stuff, made dinner and by that time the whole movie ws ready to go. Another advantage is that you can preview movies in advance - I have avoided a lit of clinkers this way...

Hulu - I dont use but also needs a vpn hook up

Youtube - entertaining but not much use for any movies or television

I did bittorrents for a while about 10 years ago but finally gave up. If you need to know how to do this stuff ask a 20-25 y/o. My nephews and nieces (allegedly) almost never pay for content...

If u dont mind copyright violation, piratebay.se and ex.ua seem well-stocked. Personally , i would be happy to pay for my content, but what i discovered is that if u do not have a usa IP address AND a usa credit card, it is damn well impossible to stay legal.... All the legal sites (hulu, etc) demand that u have those two things. Which pretty much forces the rest of the world (even those with solid ethics) into piracy....

Ah, with a kimble and a Internet connection, you can get to any library you have a Card with! and can ck out any book you wish for free ! the wife do it all the time !! Amazon is way to expensive if you want to read anything new !! The Public Library is still the best even for e-books ! just our 2 cents

We use Amazon and kindle ... We don't find it that expensive.
