"Dennis" Helps Reef

Hurricane Dennis Rights Sunken Navy Ship
Florida Keys dive operators are thanking Hurricane Dennis for righting the Spiegel Grove, a retired 510-foot Navy ship that sank prematurely and wound up resting on its starboard side when it was scuttled in 2002 to create the nation's largest artificial reef, according to a report in the Palm Beach Post.
When a local divemaster went down to check the visibility on the Spiegel Grove off Key Largo, he reportedly surfaced with the welcome news that the big ship was resting on its bottom as originally planned. The ship has been declared off limits to sport divers while officials inspect it and replace mooring buoys, which should take a week or two.

The "Grove" has been reopened for recreational divers as of late July from what I hear. Haven't done it (yet) but hear it's a great dive, though current can be strong at times.

Thunder Bolt

I've been wanting to do the Spiegel Grove as well. Nice to know it will be upright! Dove the Thunder Bolt last Spring, was a lot of fun. A lot of Bull sharks haunting these wrecks. Fortunately didn't see any on my dive.
