Cribbage

Any cruisers out there enjoy a game of cribbage? My brother taught me to play years ago. We play when we get together for the holidays. It took me a really long time to beat him, but now I got the strategy down. None of my land lubber friends seem interested in learning. I know you can play with up to four people, but I never have had the opportunity. I've also heard many people have customized rules. Do you have any interesting ways to play cribbage?

Cheers

Re: Cribbage

Play with my sister weekly. She is in poor health but usually beats me. It seems like an easy game, but now when I view someone watching... the rules are a little wierd! We played cards from about the age of 4 and up. Personally I think it's a great way to learn logic, statistics and of course math! Not sure "Mario Bros" on the Nintendo will teach you much....

Re: Cribbage

We keep a cribbage board and scrabble on the boat, but usually only use the scrabble board.

Re: Cribbage

I enjoy a good game of cribbage. Unfortunately all of the respondents so far have been on the west coast and I'm in the Bahamas.

Re: Cribbage

I learned to count in 15s, I later learned the base ten system.
I play at the expert level on my iPhone, when playing with others I don't find many good players, plus I have found a few holes in the programing of the game on my phone that I exploit to win, same as I would with a live opponent. .

My father was USN (retired) and played cribbage most of his life, just about every one I know and/or knew who is retired navy (except those who were sick of it) played cribbage.

Re: Cribbage

I learned math playing cribbage on the boat and my daughter still has the teak crib board my dad made. The pegs are metal (bronze) and pretty well worn. It's a great game; alas, few play it these days. I haven't played for over a decade.

Another game you might consider if you like Scrabble is Upwords. The packaging is lots bigger than the actual game. We enjoyed it more than Scrabble and the tiles don't slide. Our modified rules allowed any height of tile, didn't keep score, and instead the winner was the first to entirely dispose of their tiles. For children especially I believe it is a better choice than Scrabble, and I thought it was a lot more fun.

Same in the Merch.
Not quite the same today what with crew size cut to minimum.

Re: Cribbage

I play with my grandfather. This last Christmas day he scored a 29 hand, odds are something like 1 in 216,500. He said he's been playing cribbage for 78 years and never gotten a perfect hand. Had seen them a couple of times, never in his own hand. His comment was it was the best Christmas gift he ever had. I was honored to be playing with him when it happened. It's a great game and one I will never stop playing.

Re: Cribbage

My wife uses cribbage as a threat. She gets a lot of work out of me just by adding "..or we could play cribbage" to a request.
