Boat Names...point of view

I'm always intrigued with what people name their boats. The first funny boat name I can recall is a local banker who sailed "Loan Arranger".

It used to be that many boats had female names (boats being a "she"), and often named after the wife.

Now I realize that ALL boats are named after our spouses. With this in mind, try walking the docks and see what comes up. Please post any good ones here.

For example...my own boat (I did not name it, I can blame the previous owner) is called COMPROMISE.

A friend of mine from college days told every girl he was interested in, "I named my boat after you." The name of his boat was After You.

And why do you thing that is a good name?

Just curious because the most common boat names seem to have something to do with sex, like "Water Bed" or "Wet Dreams." So, why not just name the boat "Intercourse" because that's what you are referring to?

Again, it's not criticism. I just want to know.

Boatpoker has a pretty tricky name with Sir Osis of the River.

Depending on where you cruise, some of these boat names just don't work. Not saying you should name your boat so it can be pronounced in Spanish or something, but some are just impossible, usually the more absurd ones. Toss in some accent and you don't know what's going on.

USCG boat documentation requirements:

"Documented vessels do not display their official numbers on the outside of the hull, but are identified by the name and hailing port. The application for documentation must include a name for the vessel composed of letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals and may not exceed 33 characters. The name may not be identical, actually or phonetically, to any word or words used to solicit assistance at sea; may not contain or be phonetically identical to obscene, indecent, or profane language, or to racial or ethnic epithets. Once established, a vessel's name may not be changed without application, fees, and the consent of the Director, National Vessel Documentation Center. There is no rule against duplication of names for documented vessels, so hailing ports are helpful in identifying vessels."

Saw a boat named the "Bearded Clam"

Like that name A LOT.....just don't think I could maintain my composure using that name on the radio...esp after a few cocktails.

That was also a cartoon in Mad Magazine. I have no idea why I remember that.

I told my wife that if she dies before I do that she will have to find me on my sailboat somewhere near a tropical island if she wants to haunt me. That boat will be called "She Went First"
