Boat Games People Play

Organizing a 4 hour sail cruise in sheltered waters approx 40 people mostly men and wanting suggestions for onboard team activities.
Corporate type activities,team building,brain fodder etc.
Will be aboard 2 cats. motor sailing so can be competitive between groups and or boats.Cheers Geoff.

Make sure none of them have beer bellies and the dreaded plumbers crack showing while on deck. That will surely ruin any other boaters day if not week.

I have been thinking about this one since you've posted it and its difficult to figure out good team building games for 2 x 20 people in 4 hours.

At anchor.

For each team of 5 people put 3 baskets underwater tethered to different depths inside the baskets put some objects (in the harder to set up game it was live lobsters) and each team member has to retrieve as many as possible but only one in each hand max, only one person per team in the water at a time
Score by depths recovered.
Promotes team work to determine who can dive deepest goes for the deepest etc.

Underway:
"Rescue"
Each boat is a team.
At a specific time both teams are told there's a rescue to be performed.
You will need to find an island, bay, anchorage etc and prearrange drop off of some article to be rescued. Article should be hidden, maybe a few hundred meters from shore.
At the time both teams are told they are given cryptic clues to the bays name. And crypic clues once ashore to find the object.
given a GPS (without instructions how to use it!)
The teams then decide where the bay is and direct the real skipper to it. Once there its a quick cryptic orienteering course to find the object.
Maybe you can have the beach location for your lunch stop etc.
Maybe it includes sailing the boats as well, or just motoring.
The real skipper just holds the wheel and goes where directed but obviously safely.


Alternatively try to see if there's a normal land based team game you could do on a boat.

I just found a good one:
Objective:
For each person to contribute to the overall success of the group by doing his/her individual part and by helpling others when they need it.
Group Size:
8 to 20 is ideal
Materials:
One long climbing rope
Description:
This is a fun variation to the popular game Knots, where people grab each other's hands and try to get untangled. In this game there is less human contact, so it is less threatening but still a challenge.
Tie one overhand knot in the rope for each person that is in the group. Space the knots about two feet apart. Instruct group members to select a knot on the rope and stand by it on either side of the rope. Then tell them to grab the rope on either side of the knot with one hand. Some people will grab further out from their knot than others, but that is OK. Now challenge the group to untie all of the knots without anyone letting go of the rope or without moving the hand that is on the rope. Participants may use only their free hand to untie knots.
You may set this activity up by having the group think of things that are "knots" for the group that need to be "untied," or have the knots represent problems for the group that need to be straightened out.

Wow Mark, I'm really impressed! That last game especially, took some real thought. I was still trying to work out why anyone would want to be a "corporate type" person and be led in a bunch of team-building exercises.

The corporate types stole the idea from the military.
Games are played to teach leadership (in all its different types and methods) and initiative.

Corporations love it because they can break down the normal office hierachies and make an office work as a team in a very different way. Not only does it show managers that their staff may be a lot more capable than they thought, but to be able to lead when they themselves may not know the answers.

It can also include very short ideas used in long seminars to keep people awake. So in a 5 minute break between 2 lectures somone mingt roll in with 50 bongo drums and get everyone playing together --> Team building and a wake up

Its a pretty big industry now.

By the way, the US military is playing an online game with the general public to work out new ways to stop piracy. Gamers push piracy fight to the next level

Don't get me wrong, I know how it works and why they do it, I just can't understand why anyone would want to have to. (the employees) I was in a multi-day training seminar years ago, and the instructor turned the air conditioner down to 55 degrees and threw hard candies at us on a whim, whenever he thought it appropriate to keep our attention. I thought, "Why am I sitting here letting this goof treat me like this?" and got up and walked out. Never went back to the corporate world, and I'm so much happier for it.

I'm not being facetious ... you didn't want to be in that world, and thats probably better for both of you
