When I saw the thread title, my first thought was:
The kind that are sitting on the bottom.

Re: Best kind of Jet Ski
Is he going backwards? I once saw some guy cruising down an open part of the ICW on a nice Jet ski doing probably 50 or so, it looked pretty nice. Safer than riding a motorcycle Sunday morning.

Curious, what's so bad about jet ski's?
Where we are moored now they buzz by every now and then, but they bother me a lot less than the constant flow of power boats of various sizes that go by at full plow speed. I would never buy one, but I've been on a couple and can attest to them being fun as hell.

I do have jet skis - heaps of fun but have always been mindful of those who are there for the piece and quiet. I hate the lights and music that people play somehow thinking that you will think they are cool. They play the music non stop, the jet skis buzz past and are gone.

Almost invariably, I find that no matter how old or smart the rider is, as soon as he climbs on board one he acts like a dumb teenager undergoing an adrenaline overload . (And I use the masculine pronoun quite deliberately).

Part of the bad rep jet skis have is due to some drivers not being as well behaved as those you seem to have contact with. It is not unheard of for jet skis to circle anchored boats. As a rule they do this at speed and the noise can be annoying.
But in many areas in Florida and the Keys where I cruise the speed they travel at causes problems by scaring wildlife. All the national parks (and there are a lot in Florida and the Keys) ban jet skis. There have been threads at CF about boats with jet skis being refused safe harbor in national parks. There are also many local rules banning jet skis on lakes and rivers in Florida.
Bottom line is jet skis are banned in many places because of drivers in the past causing problems.

Re: Best kind of Jet Ski
Idiot and/or inconsiderate boaters are not restricted to jet skis, but there does appear to be higher proportion of them. I was recently anchored in the 1000 Islands. It was an hourly occurrence to have jet skis whipping right through our crowded anchorages at full speed. Or the "play" nearby causing constant wakes and incredibly annoying noise.
I too think there is a special place in hell reserved for people who insist on imposing their music on everyone in an anchorage. I'm not sure jet skis are worse.

Re: Best kind of Jet Ski
At least (most?) the jet skis disappear at dusk while the music can continue 'till the wee hours.
We were having a debate the other day re whether one would be convicted if one were to remove the driver from the jet ski via 30.06. The outcome seemed to hinge on the "jury of your peers" question.

A guy I know, who's probably in his 70's, rides his with his ball cap facing forward. He has never gone fast enough to blow his hat off. If he ever sells it, I'm first on the list of buyers, as I know it isn't your typical jet ski with 400 wide open hours.

Re: Best kind of Jet Ski
I suggest that those who hate Jet Skis have never ridden one.
I have a Kawasaki 1100 Jet Ski that I use as a dinghy.
Safe, fast, and dry (relatively)
And...Fast enough to get groceries back to my boat before the ice cream melts.
It tows easily behind my sailboat.
And as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.
