My other half was seriously considering it, but decided against - with camera and metal detector our travel pace will slow down to that of a snail....

Re: Anybody carry a Metal Detector?

We carried a garret sea hunter dive metal detector. On land we found silver in La Blancia, VN; gold and diamond ring in St Martin, a doubloon Joist van Dyke, BVI (fake) and tons of coins and other items. It is fun, great excersize, and a great way to meet and talk with people.

Re: Anybody carry a Metal Detector?

I'd be very interested in knowing what the best models are, as I am seriously thinking of getting one.

Re: Anybody Carry a Metal Detector ?

Seems to me that there are a lot of counties that prohibit bringing metal detectors in. Something to check into.

Re: Anybody Carry a Metal Detector ?

I had one but it quit working just sitting in storage. If you get one it needs to be the water proof type, corrosion sets into the electronics.

Re: Anybody Carry a Metal Detector ?

The best is a matter of opinion. There are many treasure hunting forums to get an idea.

We choose one that was dive capable because we dive (I think it was 200 ft), but it also makes it pretty weather proof. The Garret Sea hunter line is what many of the professional treasure divers use. It is durable and easy to use and works well. But it was not cheap.

There's an interesting local down here in S. Florida that has a reputation of doing fairly well. A new twist for a booty call.

My entire boat would set it off. I have to stand on the aluminum pilothouse roof to get my wristtop compass to work properly!

Re: Anybody Carry a Metal Detector ?

Most of the beaches I've seen, there are armies of these guys sweeping every square inch. If you took one to a remote island it is possible to find a beach that hasn't already been picked clean. Not a bad idea, if you happen to stumble across an old treasure cache.
