One more macro, if you click on the bar and resize you can see a tear in the leading edge of the dragonfly's wing

Nice pics!

Here's another one from my new 8-15L:

This is the 70-200 f/2.8L with the D500 close-up lens attached to it:

Again the 70-200L but now with the 2x TeleConverter attached for 400mm:

ciao!
Nick.

The first image is awesome. Perfect example of a 'magic hour' shot. Very well composed!

Hi nick, sorry I'm on this late , but your using topish 'L' lenses with a D500, has this not got a crop factor sensor of perhaps 1.6. So as a result your 70-210 f 2.8 ( I'm assuming is) is at full zoom effectively with teleconverter operating at 640mm in 35mm terms.....or am I missing the point?

Right about the effective FOV. It also turns the 2.8 f ratio close to f8, I am too lazy to do the arithmetic.

Hi DJ,

The camera used is a 5D Mark II and a 7D (all three above are 5D2). The D500 is a close-up lens that screws onto a lens like the 70-200 to convert it into a kind of macro lens (just like a filter). We just got it so that we don't always have to carry a macro lens with us, which gets tiresome in the jungle here.

The 8-15L is awesome, I'm gonna make pictures with it that most will think are photoshopped I have been looking at it for a long time because it's a bunch of money for a fisheye but it is way better than the 15mm fisheye that I tried before. At 8mm on a full frame like the 5D2 it makes a circular capture which is a full 180 degree sphere!

When I put the 2x TC onto the 70-200 f/2.8 it becomes 140-400mm f/5.6. When I put that on the 7D, which is also a 1.6x crop sensor, it becomes 224-640mm f/5.6 (so the f-value is changed by the teleconverter but not by the sensor... i.e. the lens stays the same.

However... the field of depth gets multiplied by 1.6x too, so you loose a bit of the creamy bokeh.

We have a whole range of nice lenses and we're buying three more in the coming months: the 70-300L, 100-400L and the MP-E65. The lenses we currently use most often are the 100L macro, 24-105L, 17-40L and 70-200L.

I soon need to start selling some stuff or I won't be able to make sense of it anymore. I'm hoping for a 7D Mark 2 that keeps the crop sensor but improves pixel quality and low light performance.

ciao!
Nick.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

I just picked up a Canon T2i, hope for some better pics than my pocket camera. I know its not on the same level as some of you guys in this post but it seems like pretty nice upgrade for me.

It sure is. Let me tell you something: when you take a picture with that camera outside during the day, not even professionals know if it's either a T2i or 1DX.

That changes however with the lens you use. While there are very good EF-S lenses (the 17-55 and 10-22 are superb!) they are not of the class of the L-series. For example, they are not weatherproofed.

I think you may have a 18-55mm lens with it? Keep using that while saving for an upgrade to L-glass. Don't give in and buy a whole set of cheap glass. The 70-300L is a perfect all-round lens in a nice compact format (and at a fair price I think). I am getting one for visiting Washington DC incl. Smithsonian museums and NYC, even though I already have even better L-glass for that whole focal range.

ciao!
Nick.

I AM!

You can see some of my underwater stuff on my site and on the facebook page for the boat. Ikelite with the 8" dome and flat port and a pair of DS-125s on ULCS arms. Speaking of which, I really need to get back in the water.
