Re: Any photographers with DSLR's around?

Photography used to be my favourite big time hobby. It's got a bit dull in the last couple of years.

Still have my gear though. Canon 1Ds3, 5D2, 200L f2, 135L f2, 85L f1.2, 35L f1.4, 24-70L f2.8, 70-200L f2.8 and various other stuff including a huge list of studio equipment for model photography

I am hopeless at photography on my boat. Just can't do it or at least are always to distracted.

So here is some of my model photos.

from my recent "project" in the studio

My other love (car not model). Lighting from my portable Elinchrom studio lights

More with my portable studio lights

Every home should have one

Something sweet with my 1Ds3 & 200L

You will probably maintain your sanity longer shooting ants and bugs than if you have to deal with young model wannabe girls **bang head repeatedly**

Your new portable studio lights, question, are they flat panel LED arrays that really kick out the lumens without drinking much electricity?

Hi Randy,

I adjusted your image a bit. There are hard limits for the software because I used the jpg that you posted. If the software gets a RAW file, there is 3 times as much room to work with, much like what could be done with chemicals in the old dark rooms. I used Adobe Lightroom 3.6 for this. The first image is as you posted, the second is my post processed version:

EDIT: what I did in Lightroom:

- import image and create virtual copy for processing
- Use Lightroom presets for auto-tone, punch and sharpening/narrow-edges
- Add 55 highlight recovery to try and correct the white clipping in the water (need RAW for better result)
- Use the adjustment brush to further darken the exposure in the white clipped areas in the water
- Added fill light for dark areas... works like adding a flash to the shot
- Upped the vibrance and saturation a bit
- Reduced yellow saturation a bit
- Adjusted white balance a bit

ciao!
Nick.

Re: Any photographers with DSLR's around?

I used to have top shelf SLR equipment but gave up on it when we went sailing. Now with a beaten up G3 and looking towards the G1X.

I am very glad we downgraded. Less gear, less hassle, more photography.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Any photographers with DSLR's around?

I have a Canon 5D2 with a 16-35mm, 85mm, and 300mm lens. I would like to get an underwater housing for it if I get a boat and want to use it underwater, but they are fairly expensive. I do have a Pelican 1514 case for it already.

I don't have a Pelican 1700 case for the tripod yet though.

I will say the Canon G1X looks like a great camera and for a sailboat, that would be a great choice.

Amateur here too

#4 photo, if you re-take that now (to get new date in the picture), you can enter the current challenge at Dgrin and probably win it too (it's themed up high or down below or something like that)

The cat is behind glass. You can eliminate the glare and reflections by using a circular polarizing filter. These have many more uses, like for seascapes etc.

The shot aboard... try working with wider angles. Think "go wide and close" but don't go so close that their noses go huge or you'll be sorry

I just survived this shot although Josie will whack me if she finds out I'm posting this here
This is 12mm wide, f8 and camera real close at 2' or 3'. This is a Tokina 12-24mm lens on a Canon 7D.

ciao!

Yes the G1-X will be something but for us it's priced too high to add to what we have. For that money I can buy another top flash unit for example. But if I were without DSLR, I would not hesitate for a second

Okay, now something weird... I "made" this picture today. It is to practice "focus stacking". The silver gecko is about 75 mm long and the depth of field for the camera was just 5mm. I made 15 shots, slicing the subject into focus much like a MRI scan does. Those 15 shots I loaded as 15 layers into Photoshop CS5.1, where I first aligned them (automatic) and next blended them so that the in focus part of each slice was blended to the next slices etc. which is also automatic. My mean fast i7 CPU was a bit busy with that because each of the 15 captures is 21 megapixels (full sensor 5D2). The resulting TIFF was 2.4 GByte

But I like the result: tack sharp focus and I can't see where the blending was done. This focus stacking, HDR and Panorama stitching is what Photoshop CS5 is really good for but does that make good for the $650.- price tag? Under protest but I guess it does. You also get much better post-processing abilities but it's not that much better compared to Lightroom. It is the layers that make the difference.

EDIT: to make this clearer, here is the first slice used with just the tip of the snout in focus:

ciao!
Nick.
