Feeling disappointed today

I'm moving to full time cruising this year and want to rationalise my current Canon lineup (5D2, 1Ds3 & 1Dx). Whilst it has still has value I want to sell my 1Dx (I kept the 1Ds3 because it's a MUCH better camera than it's used value suggests) and I want to upgrade my 5D2 which is my "travel camera" and therefore will be my primary cruising camera.

One feature I really want for my cruising camera is a built in GPS. I bought the GPS accessory for my 1Dx and also have a P&S with GPS and when shooting whilst cruising I really appreciate the ability to go into Lightroom or on some photo hosting sites and see where I took the photo. I learnt very quickly that it's annoying to have the external GPS and tend to forget it when I should have used it.

Yesterday Canon released the successors to the 5D3, the 5Ds & 5Ds R... 50.5mp sensor but sadly no GPS. Given that they had added GPS to the 6D & 7D2 I expected that the new 5D would have it as well, especially as the 5Ds R version is very much a camera for landscape photography

Now I am in a dilemma... I prefer full frame (I can live without my 16-35 if I have FF) but the 6D's AF is so primitive and the 7D2 is not FF so I must carry the 16-35.

I will have my dive gear onboard and would finally like to get dive housing but it needs to be for a camera I will want to keep long term or I buy a cheap 7xxD that is primarily for the dive housing.

The new 5Ds does looks sooooo good with the exception of the GPS (release date timing is not so good for my plans though) Would be perfect for my model photography as well as for travel

We are adding the 7D2 to our collection and I think it would do great for you too. The crop sensor is a feature that doubles the functionality of every lens you have, you'll like that. It's also as good an image as the 5D2 puts out and I'm just keeping my 5D2. I add GPS coordinates with Lightroom or, when moving a lot, I record my track and merge full GPS data with the pictures. Just have to set the camera clock precisely and this is fully automatic.

A couple of years ago I nearly bought a PhaseOne because of the level of detail you can get with all of those pixels. Now I am thinking I will end up getting the 5Ds when I get back to the real world (on land & job) and if I start up my model photography again. Hopefully by then, it will be bargain priced

The 5Ds does make me think that I should with 99.999% certainty sell my 1Dx now. I did not use the "sports" side of it too often, but it is still nice to have that ability, so maybe the 7D2 could be a good option for me now, and for the price used 1Dx's are listed here, I could buy the 7D2 and an Ikelite housing, but maybe not the port or light

If I get the 7D2 then it was not a waste keeping the EF-S 10-22 that I last used when I was using my 20D.

While setting up a portable studio for head shots yesterday I played around with a glass Buddha bust. The lighting was typical with a Paul Buff parabolic umbrella slightly overhead to camera right for a soft key light, a homemade foam board reflector in clamshell position and a snooted side light to provide separation (it is aimed to fall on the cheek without lighting the nose.) Yongnuo YN-622N-TX transmitter on Nikon D3 triggers an off-camera SB800 flash on a Yongnuo YN-622 receiver which then triggers slaved Alien Bee studio lights.

Now to talk the GF into posing, the tricky part.

That's a very nice shot! You might enjoy trying it a bit differently if you want to make it more 3D. Try turning the bust a bit toward the key light, reduce the fill by a considerable amount, and ditch the back light altogether.

Separation from the background is not necessarily a requirement for parts of the subject and you might like the result. I've always been a big fan of James Wong Howe's, "never state what you can imply," advice.

I do enjoy the technical precision of your shot and I think the "dead center Pete" framing is appropriate for it, but if you try these other things, it will probably benefit from the old "Rule of Thirds" business, even though the Golden Mean 1.6:1 is really a more accurate description.

As for the girlfriend, I can't image she would refuse.

Yes, it's been a challenge just like I thought it would be, with lots of excuses from the potential model. This morning she relented as she went out the door to work after I pleaded "it will only take ten seconds!"

She let me take ONE exposure, and she said "I am not going to smile." I think it may be a while before I get to do a lingerie shoot ha. The dog OTOH was content to sit still as long as I kept giving her treats, but I couldn't get any light to her eyes even after a trim job, reflectors etc.

Working with a camera is far removed from working with fiberglass.
