How do you clean your lenses on board?

I have a canon 70D and have a UV filter on the front of the lens.

In my canon manual, it says that i must not use organic solvents. I presume they mean alcohol. How do I get the salt spray off and any other greasy type coating eg. finger marks and anything that is not dry dust?

I use a rocket duster and special micro fiber cloth approved for lenses.

For dry cleaning, use a "lens pen". For wet cleaning, I use special lens paper with optical cleaning liquid, which is sold for prescription glasses. I believe it is distilled water.

The lens pen takes care of 99% of all cleaning. It uses carbon powder.

Hey Spark, what you have works fairly well. Might want to add a liquid lens cleaner for the stubborn stuff.

When shooting on the water I keep a regular towel close at hand to cover my camera from incoming waves. If I miss I just lick the salt off and wipe with the towel. This is one reason for a protective filter.

I had fun taking this pic today in the Santa Monica bay, but am wondering about the artificating in the pic. I had a uv filter on a 55-210mm telephoto attached to my Sony NEX-6. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe its the sun...

Not sure but I think a polarising filter is the go on water in those sort of conditions.

Downunder....i think you are right. Rookie mistake! I went with the UV....

I only use UV filters to protect the outer element from salt spray and dust. A circular polarizer cuts through glare when adjusted right.

you could but there would really be no point. Besides, the more glass you add to the front of your lens, the more you run the risk of degrading the image.

I took some pics on a beach on a very windy day and have a mixture of fine sand and salt spray on my UV filter as well as on the camera body and lens body.

The UV filter you can take off and hold under a running faucet to rinse it off but the camera body with all the switches etc. will be the problem. Use a moist microfiber cloth I think, but be careful.
