There is a lot more than simply using a fisheye to creating a good split image. Here is an example of what I consider interesting subject matter that follows the rule that a clear sky does not sell images that did not use a fisheye, taken using a mirrorless camera.

On the other hand here is an image taken with a DSLR with a fisheye in a good housing with a domed port (I consider a domed port more important than a fisheye when doing splits for multiple reasons including fewer water drops on the port) where the interesting subject ducked its head behind some weeds almost ruining the image
