It would, with the right techniques! But it will costs serious $$$ to get gear that really makes that umpff difference.

The big things are detail, clarity, true colors and last but not least low noise. Expensive optics are key.

Check out the detail of this picture that my better half captured today... in the wild, no tricks:

This was captured with a Canon 7D with a EF100-400L lens. The pictures I posted above are from a Canon 5D Mk.2 with an EF70-300L lens.

You captured the pics on a memory card? What next did you do with them? Transfer to computer? Use iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture software? Post processing is what used to be done by the laboratory that developed and printed your pictures... with digital you have to do that yourself.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Sorry, I was being intentionally obtuse. I should remember all that from when I'd help my dad out in the Dark room :-). I have an adaptor that plugs my memory card into my IPad. The iPad doesn't have photoshop or but does have a very rudimentary edit/crop option.

I am having issues with the pictures being a little too dark, underexposed, when pointing up to the sky, like in the tree pic.

I need to make a quick reference card for different situations (fstop, ISO, and such).

I think the iPad is too lightweight for serious photo management and developing. This is one of the few things I still need my laptop for. If you have a Macbook, you can choose between Aperture (Apple) and Lightroom (Adobe). With Windows, you have Lightroom.

You can download a trial or beta version of Lightroom to get a feel for it. Both aps are good. The software to manage and develop your pictures is as important as the camera. Remember to use the RAW format instead of jpg so that you have much more leverage to develop later on. RAW is like having a film negative while jpg is only a print.

Your camera averaged exposure between the tree and the sky. You can adjust that on the camera by telling it to add a stop or two to the exposure. But, that may over expose the sky. What really helps here is a circular polarizer. I use HDR with special software for some of the landscape photo's, in addition to the polarizer.

If you like photography, you have a great path of discovery and joy ahead of you

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

All this talk about post-processing makes me think of this image

for the record, I use adobe lightroom for 90% of my post-processing work.

Currently, my gear includes a Cannon 60D and various lens.

I'll try to get a few shots uploaded later today.

We started using camo gear to get closer to the wildlife...

Here's Josie half camouflaged. Note the big 400mm lens has camo-tape too!

I have decided that I will publish a book of my wildlife photos. This is a sample of a shot that will be included in the book. It was taken with a 1Dx & 100-400L

The book will be called "arses of animals I missed"

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Here's one I took from a while back. This is at the Gaylord Hotel in Nashville, TN. It was hand-held. I held my breath during the shot to stay as still as possible to get the water the way I wanted. Took 5 tries.

Older Canon Rebel XT w/ 28-135EF lens

Running water is a challenging but rewarding subject using the camera has many similarities with precision shooting a rifle; we did a lot of Olympic discipline rifle shooting and this certainly helped our technique. With the current generation of lens stabilization, it makes me wish my rifle had that same tech as it would have produced a gold medal may be

Yes, the sharpest pictures are always those that show their behind With the birds, the camouflage is producing the results we hoped for, but the effort and money (comfortable camo gear is expensive!) is amazing. At least, here in the US you can buy it all easily because hunting is not considered for nutcases like elsewhere yet.

I never managed a single good picture of a dolphin or whale. We now have the right gear but are in the wrong spot. It's always something

Jedi if you are still land cruising the US and dressed like this you will want to add some hunter orange on yourselves regardless of local laws. There are some idiot hunters out there.
