This is just a flower but I post it because it's captured using a standard lens instead of a specialized one; just to show that great pics can be done with any focal length. This is the only EF-S lens we have, the very high quality EF-S17-55 f/2.8IS USM. It has no weather sealing so we only take it out in good weather away from the sea/salt-air.

I'm guessing that the price will not be fun

Just saw the price €11800

That is just shy of the 800mm

This lens was the reason we went to NYC to buy a good new copy of the 100-400L that we have now. We also have the 1.4x and the 2.0x extenders with it so we're at 800mm already. This new one is one stop better at 5x the price I suspect the 100-400L will be harder and harder to find now that new lens is out.

For that amount of money, I can also buy the prime 400L f/2.8 ... now that is nice. At 800mm with a 2.0 extender it becomes f/5.6. At 560mm with the 1.4x extender it is f/4. But in the darkish jungle you take it out at 400mm and it's a lovely f2.8. We have 200mm at f2.8 now.

On the other hand, I hope to win a couple of stops when the 7D mk.II comes out...

Or for the same money you can get the 800mm, add your 2x and shoot at 1600mm 😃

Based on the pricing I would expect (or hope) that the IQ will be very much superior to the 100-400

I don't think so... a bit more resolution like all the newer Mk.II lenses but the big factor is that one extra stop. It's what makes it so costly. If you compare the shots then the shot with the 200-400 might be at ISO800 while the 100-400 is at ISO1600 and yes then the IQ of the 200-400 will me much better because of noise... but it was caused by the one stop difference.

When you do wildlife photography out in the open, like on safaris, the 100-400 captures price winning shots. Out here in the dark jungle, not so much.

I guess an extra stop on a zoom really drives up the price.

I just spent. Long weekend on my boat, a couple of days working and a couple sailing. I took with me the 1Dx, a Leica P&S and a GoPro.

The only photos I took were with my iPhone5, half of which were using Instagram.... So stupid!

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

I am jumping in rather late here. I have been a DSLR enthusiast for a while now. I started with a Canon 10D and presently own a 1Dmk3.

The 10D got a bad rap for front focus and bad low light performance but I found it to be excellent.

And the 1D mk3 also had a bad rap for focusing. I have had some trouble with this one when using AI Servo mode but it hasn't been enough to make me stop using it.

Great pics!

The 10D has a fine reputation in my circle of friends, and as it has served you well, I wouldn't concern myself much with reputations!

Thanks! This was with some locals in an ancient monohull of unknown vintage off the coast of Cabo, Mexico. It was kind of a surreal sunset that night.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

I took this shot last week using my 1Dx.

My crew member looks perhaps a bit photoshopped in because she is actually lit from a 600ex-rt mounted on the bimimi. The lighting was not meant for a wide shot of my boat.

It was a bit windy and my yacht was facing the open entrance of Gouvia marina in Corfu. She's now snugly hidden away in a more sheltered part of the marina
