Man, was I wrong, assuming I might have been the only gear head. Now I'll go ahead and totally blow my cover, I'm a demented, long term gear head.

And of course the boat back then was also demented, hemi powered V-drive flattie.


Too many more in between, but now I've become civilized, if you ignore the Track-T. Did any of you know you can get a 556 hp Caddy, with a 6 speed dual clutch disc manual transmission?

"Budweiser Balcony" - That would be Willow Springs? Only trekked out there once. For the first time in history I had pole position in both my classes. Blew a seal, oiled the rear tire, high sided and broke my arm. In practice. Didn't get to race. A very expensive scenic drive across country.

Sounds like you are familiar with the V. Jay Leno in Popular Mechanics, declared the CTS-V as a future collectible. I think the production numbers alone might assure that, 60,000 CTS each year, 1,800 are Vs, out of that 1,800, 180 are stick shift.

The really nice thing about it is the magnetic ride system. Prior to getting the V, the longest my 92 year old dad could ride in a car was around 60 miles, in this car we can drive 10 hours with no complaints. Placerville to Yosemite, then 395 at Lee Vinning, north to Carson City, Tahoe, back to Placerville.

Ha, a good thread. I bet there is a high correlation between people who tinker or tinkered with old cars, and people who cruise (which = a lot of tinkering, after all). My car tinkering days ended years ago, when I hit the active stage of my career. I won't bore anyone with the list of previous victims of my tinkering, but suffice to say that I still own a 1970 Porsche 911S Targa (in totally original condition), and two MGA's. When I built my lake house some years ago, I built finally my dream garage with book shelves,a living area, a beautifully finished floor (in order to be able to enjoy crawling around under cars), and even a grease pit. But I've never turned a wrench in it. Like others here, I've moved on - cars don't interest me much anymore. I get more than my share of tinkering on the boat. I sometimes even think about selling the irreplaceable Porsche for sails. . .

By the way, putting in some years keeping English cars running is excellent preparation for cruising - learning to coax function out of cantankerous, poorly engineered, poorly made, and expensive machinery is an invaluable skill for a cruiser

Got it in one!

No AC since it's located at 55 degrees N, but you got the rest of it right. Bookshelves with 50 years of bound copies of R&T. Unfortunately, it was built for a life I no longer live. Other than winterizing the odd outboard (it's a lake house) or repairing the odd snowmobile, I never turn a wrench in it

There is indeed no other car (not even a Russian) that fits the above as the several British cars I have had. Jaguar from the '50's and 60's on top of all.
One night we had to entice a girl to pull down her nylons because of a broken fanbelt ......... I must make an exemption for the Triumph 2000 - that car gave me no troubles at all.
But it was a good time with lots of fun and crazy stories - the sheer luxury of the 3,8 Mk 2 still unequalled .......
