Captain Ron and Pirates of the Caribbean, now there are two "sailing" movies that were technically very accurate. Not.

I'm surprised many here were able to sit through them.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

If you watch the movie - which I did last night - with the idea of "What did he do wrong?" and think of what your priorities would be or how you would approach the problems he faced, then it can be worthwhile to watch.

Otherwise, save your money and time - it isn't worth watching....

A couple of friends here have watched the movie (non sailors) and are now convinced I'll die on this delivery..
Previously they were oh so envious of my life..

Tough crowd but I'll play...

How many here steer a boat keeping both hands high and using quick hand motions turning the wheel about two inches at a time like the character did?

I've never seen anybody steer that way.

I've never seen anybody steer that way.
That was just one of a few thousand complaints I had.

Missed it at the theater it came and went so quickly, so rented it yesterday. I'm really glad I didn't pay more than $1.25 to watch it. Maybe I missed the premise and it was supposed to be about a rank amateur going to sea and to show what he did wrong. If that wasn't the original plan it certainly worked out that way.

My first big complaint, he has this giant hole just above the waterline and instead of plugging the hole, even stuffing rags in it or staying on the starboard tack to keep the hole above the water he sails around forever filing the boat with water (and shorting out his electrical system in the process) to look at the container, retrieve his sea anchor and who knows what else.

If you have a hole in the boat and water is pouring in, the first thing anyone on the planet, even the greenest sailor that ever left the dock, will do is STOP THE WATER!!!!

From there it never got any better.

Did they have not a single actual sailor to consult on the movie?

It was both I think. He had some knowledge on a few things; but then none at all (celestial; sextant still in the box; Mary Blewettt?? omg). He was grossly unprepared, but thought he was (not stressing; making a meal). You don't know your holes until **** happens then you find you don't know as much **** as you thought you did.

I understood the property master/production designer had some experience as he was instrumental in choosing the boat(s) used for the movie.
