Coops.
Better , add a few subtitles , subject him to long mental existentialist conversations while he ponders the meaning of life, containers and the suspension of the reality of sailing , add a taste fully revealed breast , hey voila , Art.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

I have to chime in: Nautically, the film's play out was poor, 1/5. Someone prior gave it an existential spin, of which, I
can clearly see, but I couldn't get past the absurdity of redford's attempts at survival. The character made every
possible mistake in common knowledge seamanship and made these pathetic attempts to repair the damage to his hull which sustained a 12-16" gash by hitting a container in light seas. Ridiculous! No life line, no epirb, no vest, no sense. I was so looking forward to it and was so disappointed. I like Redford, too. He must have lost a bet.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

Respectfully, no I'm not. The suspension of disbelief, that all artists have to overcome, must be adequately addressed. I read about Hobbits, I see depictions of Hobbits, I suspend my tendency to dismiss this fictional creature because of the talents of Tolkien and Jackson who artistically make me want to believe in Hobbits.
All is Lost was a "realistic" portrayal, not some form of artistic expressionism such as Life of Pi.
An attentive reader/viewer wants to play the protagonist. See themselves as the character. Redford and the director make the character inept. Now, this is fine if you want to get some existentialist message out but don't challenge common fundamental survival tactics or you will suspend my want to believe what I'm reading/viewing. It would have cost them little or nothing to have had a consultant review the scenes for technical accuracy. The script would have been more plausible. The audience, btw, includes sailors, not just landlubbers. This is my opinion and I am only expressing my gross disappointment. Don't wish to anger anyone who bought the DVD.

How many Oscars does Redford take home? Bet they'll figure out a way to award him best supporting actor to himself as well haha.

I'm guessing 3+ on the mantle.

Nice!

Actually, I think we're looking at this all wrong. Every non-sailor I know who's seen this movie, has told me: "There's no way I'd ever even consider getting on an ocean crossing sailboat!". Then they tell me how crazy I am to even consider such a thing. The movie is doing us all a great service by keeping a bunch of idiots off the water. There's still too many idiots out there (present company excepted of course), but this will help. I think we need more movies like this.

You mean the gun toting , Rocna anchoring , climate denying , crew bashing , capitalist, full keel sailors are being put off. Hey another useful unintended consequence.

I've been sitting in this chair instead of getting out there (or anywhere) that my keel is getting fuller too.

Augh!

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie

Well, I've been waiting anxiously for months to see this movie and it never came to the cinema so I'm here watching it at home now. I thought you guys were a bit harsh with all your criticism, after all, it is just a movie. But! I've got to the bit where he goes into the life raft and I've got to say I'm not impressed.

Is it intended to be a first time sailer on an unseaworthy vessel 1700 miles out in the Indian Ocean? If that's the case it certainly does show his stupidity.

i am up the that exact same place in the movie right now. I am seriously considering not watching the rest. I thought I would come here and see if there are any nuggets of gold in the movie I am not seeing. So far I am seeing a different type of nugget.
