"He said the new generation monohulls 'will be very powerful boats' with foiling capabilities, but did not offer any further details."

We should be prepared to be amazed again.

Ironically, though, earlier in the article they implied that they want the boats to be something the audience could related to. Unless the audience is really hung-up on one hull vs. two, I don't see the difference. There will still be absolutely no relation to ordinary sailing boats--other than one hull.

But personally, even as a multi-hull enthusiast, I would love to see the same no-holds-barred thinking applied to big monos. Should be fun. The speeds will be amazing, without hull speed limitations.

I like this bit: "really challenges a full crew of professional yachtsman".

Got to be a lot better than one guy steering, one guy operating a game console and a pack of gorillas pumping up the hydaulics.

These kind of boats are so far outside of my experience that I have no clue, but I don't see why that would change. Until or unless the rules change

Take a skimming dish or a manta, put two foils aft and a third under the nose, and voila. Monohulls doing the same wild dance. "Prepare to be amazed!"

Re: AC back to monos

I hope they do not use foils on the monohulls in the America's cup. I am not into foils on yachts.

I did not watch the last America's cup because I am not interested in watching racing hydrofoils.

Although I have a catamaran, I would like to see the race in monohulls without foils. If it is mono a mono in the next America's cup, I might be persuaded to watch the races.

Re: AC back to monos

Before cats the monos raced closer together, using traditional tactics that any of us can use in racing. And we admired their excellence in these nearly hand to hand combats. Superb camera shots of both boats in the frame.

With cats we got a drag race situation. Reach off at lightspeed, don't care where the other boat is and he's so far away you can't cover or starboard tack him at the mark. I lost all interest.

I suspect we will continue to have cat-like races if they go to foils. Thats because each boat will have a very different point at which it starts foiling and getting on foil will be the priority rather than tactics.

Short of seeing a spectacular crash, it will be boring.
