SE Florida Marinas

Hello,

We are flying to Florida(from NH) this weekend to look at sailboats and plan on buying and keeping our boat there. We plan on staying on it on the weekends throught out the winter months.

We are looking for a marina in South Eastern Florida. Something where we can keep the boat on a slip or have option for a mooring. Easy access to ocean, and shower/laundry facilities.

Boat is going to be in the 30 foot range.

Dear Tim and Alice,

There are not any moorings, but my brokerage office is at the Royale Palm Marina which has the other amenities you are looking for. Rate is $18 / foot / month offseason.

Other popular liveaboard options in Lauderdale are on Hendricks and Isle of Venice on the north side of Las Olas. Only restriction there is you'll have to time the Las Olas bridge which opens every half hour except during rush hours. Rates vary from $15 to $20 / foot / month.

I am local to South Florida and if were me I would consider either Stuart Florida a little bit farther north or down south in Marathon.

Stuart is well protected and less "touristy"... Marathon offers a more down island type atmosphere.

Best spot, good sailing, good access to ocean (no bridges) and they have slips and moorings but there might be a waiting list. Crandon Park marina, Key Biscayne.

We're currently at Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove. Reasonable rates for the area, slips, moorings, and everything else you need are available. Also plenty to see and do ashore and easy access to Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic.

Being a liveaboard at Dinner Key is not so great - you have to walk anywhere from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile (or more) to use the facilities depending on where you get a slip. They do not provide dock carts but security sure likes passing you while riding in them (and not even acknowledging you). People are less friendly (gov't employees and the largest marina in SE Florida will probably not breed smiling). Hobo spiders in the bathroom/shower areas - getting bit is somewhat common. Also, the bathrooms and showers are pretty gross considering they are "cleaned" every day and few people shower there.

The dryers don't dry, no restaurant, no boat shop, nothing very close at all (despite what the advertisements say). Not to mention the construction that is going on is messing with parking - good luck parking close to your Pier.
