NC: Where to put a weekend getaway?

My wife and I are looking to buy a sailboat and put it in a slip somewhere in North Carolina, probably down around Beaufort/Moorhead City, or perhaps in the sound somewhere.

Can anyone recommend or warn about marinas and the areas around them?

We want the option to have a dinner or go to a local pub, so a gunk hole in the extreme sticks isn't really want we want. On the other hand, we don't want party down with a bunch of drunk ICW transient cigarette boat hooligans either.

We'd love to make friends and become part of the community where ever we put in. We both work from home, except when traveling, so a marina with power, good internet access, etc. would be a great advantage.

You might consider the Sheriton in New Bern NC. Nice marina, downtown, lounge, resturant and you're only a couple of blocks from the second best hardware store in the world (not to mention, just a few blocks to the birthplace of Pepsi ... for what it's worth)

Try Discovery Dive Marina right in the heart of Beaufort. Easy walk to downtown and the price is very resonable. I sliped my boat there for about 7 years. David

The Sheraton Marina in New Bern is now called the New Bern Grand Marina. From what I hear, they have plenty of open slips because they doubled their prices, but then they backed down and it appears that they are starting to fill up again. Oriental would be my choice. Have great sailing in 3 directions, some nice anchorages, and overnight trips to many different places. My one experience with Whittaker Creek Marina wasn't good, but otherwise have heard nothing negative about the others in the area. There is a reason it's the Sailing Capital of NC.

Thanks David! But, unfortunately, I can't find a reference to Discovery Dive Marina in Beaufort anywhere. Has it changed names since then, perhaps?

Discovery Dive Marina is located at the end of Orange Street 414. Phone is 252 728 2265. Debie Boyce is the owner. The area of the marina is in Gallants Channel accross from Town Creek Marina.
