Marinas in Mexico

Need to sail out of Straits of Juan de Fuca in early September.
However, will have to hang around until Early June before leaving for the Marquesas.
LA & San Diego are way too expensive for a retired couple.
Are there safe marinas in Mexico to safe & leave the boat for a month or so to visit family Stateside?

Yes, absolutely. La Paz, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta-and others- all offer secure marinas, at different price points. I'd probably pick marina Nuevo Vallarta or La Cruz in the Vallarta area, if for no other reason than getting to know other folks making the trip (Latitude 38's puddle jump leaves from there, with all the seminars, etc) but you have tons of choices. No worries at all. You might even decide to spend a year in MX before carrying on. It's a great place to cruise.

many leave from maz. many leave from barra. some leave from huatulco and chiapas. folks pick n choose their departure points individually. is not a tight rally.
all mexican marinas i have encountered are safe to leave boats. it is what is done. eeny meeny miney moe... pick marina here you go. if in winter, aka high season, the cheapo pickings are slim. isla marina, mazatlan seems to be least pricey in short term situations , as price doesnot vary for love nor water.

ps ALL marinas in mexico have been militarized. ALL are well protected, not all have military guards, some do....but all are safe. now that marina mazatlan has locked gates complete with cameras, all are well guarded.

Does anyone have information on the marina in Cozumel, Fonatur, I can't find a website or information to make a reservation.

Given the age of this thread, and that the discussion was about the Pacific, it may have been well to start a new thread.
Anyway. The marina in Cozumel is super tight-packed, mostly with sportfishers and charter boats. Seriously doubt there's room for a transient.
The anchorage off the town, between the ferry wharves and the marina, is pretty good, and secure from molestation in my experience. You could anchor there, dinghy in/walk to the marina, and check out the scene.

But do note that marinas on the Pacific side of Mexico are at least as expensive as California marinas (except during the summer during hurricane season). They charge in US$.


We found marinas in La Paz and Mazarlan to be very safe.

Marinas in La Paz are very full. The only one with available slips is Fonatur which is run by the local Navy. Current slip prices are $35us per foot at Don Jose and about the same at Fonatur.
