Re: isla navidad as cane hole

First off, very happy to hear that you and SB are ok, Zeehag. We've met a few times down there.

I think that Isla Navidad is a good marina, well constructed in a very protected basin, with some high hills covering east through south or thereabouts.

My concern was that the whole marina would have floated off the top of the pilings. It must have been close to doing that. The storm surge must have never materialized at the levels they were talking about in the media.

However, I really don't think that a close analysis of the Puerto Vallarta area vs. Barra as having good hurricane protection would favor Barra on any count. It's simply the difference between being a couple hundred yards from the ocean while PV is seated way back in the bay with the 25 miles of
mountains going out to Cabo Corrientes acting as a very effective barrier.

It's just my own opinion, but my money for hurricane season has always been on PV (I had boats there for 8 or 9 summers).

Anyway, very happy to hear all's well. Have a good season. I hope you get some miles under the keel sometime. It seems you've been on the same small stretch of coast for several years now, (I think we met in PV in '11 or '12 the first time. You must be itching to get some sailing in.

Glad you dodged a bullet.

Re: isla navidad as cane hole

spent summer in banderas in la cruz. saw ts damaged nueva... no way. barra tops it. cane coming into banderas is, a hell not wanna learn. happiest place of mazatlan, la cruz , or barra is hands down, barra. but i am prejudiced now.

Just amazing! So glad you came through with such minimal damage (to Solitary Bird and to yourself).

Did any boats else nearby suffer worse?

EDIT: Never mind my question. Just saw it on the "Watch Out for Patricia" thread:

"only one casualty
mega off ahore trying to come into marina in brunt of storm ended up on the rocks. oops. all hands saved."

Re: isla navidad as cane hole

I'm so very glad the story has a happy ending for you. In so many ways the internet has made life impersonal and distant. Just reading the messages of support and friendship that were sent your way while the storm got nearer made me realize that places like CF are where a new sort of friendship's been created. We wouldn't know each other if we sat next to each other on the bus but there's a whole bunch of "relationshipping" going on here.

I for one love reading your posts here and on Frugal Female Sailors.
Keep on keeping on, and since the storm was named after me, I apologize.........

Re: isla navidad as cane hole

have more damage than thought but all is repairable.
now they say we only had 165 kt wind?? was 200 mph. 250 gusts. not nm, mph. been in 150 plus mph before. was busy. this was extremely busy.
fun is fun. now time to move along to next misadventure!!

btw.. they talkin on retiring bame patricia from names list for being so strong. 879 mb, wasnt she or was it 897?? 8 something. heavy.

life is an adventure meant to be LIVED!!!

Re: isla navidad as cane hole

I am now living in Bucerias, Patricia did not blow here. I was very close to the bay, no surge, just rain. Many people were prepared but we were lucky here.
