hi, my first post.
sailing a 50' ketch singlehanded and currently about to leave grand bahama yacht club marina.[recommended] will enter usa via palm beach and then wish to sail north to spend hurricane season in a marina in georgia. i think i may have left it too late to book???? mast height 73' so will have to access from atlantic. first time cruising usa . any suggestions from board contributors would be very welcome and much appreciated. thank you. |

Golden Isles Marina and City Marina in Bruswick are in relatively safe ares and are approached through St. Simon's inlet. Draft coud be a problem in getting to Golden Isles; I've done it with a 6ft+ draft but not in four or five years. There are some safe marinas in the Thunderbolt/Savanah area as well. Any further North and you risk getting hit by a storm. Why not get north of Hatteras and into Chesapeake for the season? We move from the Carribbean to the Chesapeake every year for the past 4 years and have no problems.

Maybe Lang's Marina in St. Mary's at the FL/GA border..no bridges. Brunswick is more protected but is usually booked way earlier than this. Other possibility is Thunderbolt up the Savannah River which gives you several marinas to choose from including Hinckley, Thunderbolt Marine and others. There is a draw bridge off the Savannah river cut into Thunderbolt but no fixed bridges. A few miles further on heading south on the ICW is Isle of Hope marina which is very nice and also has inexpensive bus service into Savannah (like the Thunderbolt marinas). Marinas.com has the info on all these marinas.Marinas in Georgia, United States

I think what some folks are refering to as Brunswick Marina or Brunswick City Marina is actually Brunswick Landing Marina. Good folks, pretty much storm proof and reasonal prices. You're probably right however, they're probably booked . Their website is: Brunswick Landing Marina - Brunswick, Georgia

Brunswick Intercoastal
You already be here now, if not, beware of the intercoastal coming in behind Jekyll Island en route to Brunswick marina. At low water, there is no water, 3 feet at best. Come in from the main channel, well marked.
