As close to Houston as possible is probably still Clear Lake. There are quite a few places that can handle this. We will be there this weekend visiting friends - if you would like me to make specific inquiries and/or visit a particular marina, please let me know.

Re: Galveston or Houston, TX Marina

I would think Clear Lake would have a lot of areas shallow for a large yacht; careful pilotage would be needed into the harbors there. Kemah has a few moderately large power vessels (Boardwalk slips to 50' or sometimes 62'), with a 117' moderate-draft tour boat slipped in League City).

Wharfage off the Houston ship channel in the La Porte - Baytown - Houston area would be mostly industrial, not necessarily the greatest place for a yachtie.

Bolivar Roads or somewhere off the Galveston Channel behind Pelican Island might have something usable.

Perhaps subsidence has created a few spots with depths greater than charted, but this would require some pretty sophisticated local knowledge.

But, the yacht's professional skipper and crew should have access to information about the most appropriate moorage.

Don't think Clear Lake would be a good choice for the length or the draft...

Re: Galveston or Houston, TX Marina

Kemah Boardwalk Marina has large slips and is on Galveston Bay so no crossing Clear Lake. Is this for transient mooring?

At 10ft, I would say Seabrook/Kemah is not an option. I think Galveston is going to be your best bet.

Perhaps further than you wish, but Port Aransas might be worth checking out.

It will be difficult to cross Galveston Bay from the Ship Channel to the Clear Lake entrance. It can be done at high tide but you really have to know where you are going. I really think you will be best to stay at Galveston. Probably the Galveston Yacht basin.

Thankyou Alistair, thankyou Brian & all your other friends!!! We're taking the boat to Freeport, Texas. Port of Galveston could only offer a couple of days & have to move the boat & nasty dock/place. Places closer to Houston were all too shallow, could of made it with tender ahead maybe - but last captain lost his job for running aground. SO no risks can be taken... I'll let you know how Freeport is : ) Lots of thanks : )

Re: Galveston or Houston, TX Marina

Wow. I'm kind of scratching my head. We have very good friends with a 76' Fairmile in Clear Lake that draws 9'+. They have no problems from Lakewood, and have had their boat moored in other areas in Clear Lake. But, what the heck. I'll defer to others.
