Frustrated...Marina costs in FL?

I am having a horrible time searching and finding info on marinas.
I'm looking in both Ft Lauderdale and St Pete as a possibility.

For example, I was looking and calling around Ft Lauderdale and I was floored by the costs (average looking marinas wanting anywhere from $1k to $2.5k for a 45' monohull!!).
I then called up a respected yacht broker in the heart of Ft Lauderdale and he told me that Ft Lauderdale is one of the less expensive areas in FL. He said I should easily find $10/ft/mo pricing for a wet-slip (not a yacht club, but an adequate slip). He also said "watch out...there are pirates taking your money everywhere!".

Is anyone else running into high quoted prices and then having trouble finding marinas which are competitively priced? Any help you can provide? Are there any "marina brokers" who take a fee to find and negotiate a slip rate?

I'm just frustrated...

If you want to be in Florida and don't care where, there are some inexpensive marinas on the St. Johns River.

What do you mean by $1K? $1,000.00?
If you mean $1.00 to $2.50 I would expect that to be the per foot rate on a daily basis.
$10.00 I would expect to be the per foot rate on a monthly basis.

Re: Frustrated...Marina costs in FL?

Anyone telling you Ft Lauderdale is one of the cheapest places in Florida obviously doesn't get out much. Quite the opposite. Ft Lauderdale in my experience is in the top 3-4 most expensive places in Florida.

In general, the further north you go the cheaper it gets.

Assume by $1K-$2500 you are referring to a monthly dock rate for your boat.

Didn't see any mention of free by the OP. Just looking for something more affordable.

If you think $1000-$2500/month for dock space is a good deal then you've got a whole lot more money to burn than most of the members of this forum.

Yes. $1,000-$2,500 per month (based on a 45' monohull). Outrageous!

That has helped a bit but it doesn't help with annual rental costs.
I just need to do more research.

Re: Frustrated...Marina costs in FL?

45' slip here in St. Pete is easily under $1000 per month...

Ft. Lauderdale is also easily one of the most expensive places to dock in Florida...

You can find dockage cheaper than what you are finding but that will be in a canal behind someone's house and there will be restrictions on what you can do, parking, liveaboard, etc.

If you want a marina then they are more expensive.

Also, generally speaking, closest to the inlet and fewer or no bridges will be the most costly.

I don't know about outrageous. What are you comparing Fort Lauderdale to?

Re: Frustrated...Marina costs in FL?

KIT,
If you're intending to cruise, you'll need to break the marina habit unless money is no object. Purchase good ground tackle, develop safe anchoring skills and use marinas only when there is a real need. Life aboard is not as convenient as when tied to a dock but that's part of the cruising experience. Most seasoned, long-term cruisers I know rarely patronize marinas. And, the knowledge and skills you'll develop will give you freedom. Good luck and safe sailing.

Re: Frustrated...Marina costs in FL?

If you want Bahia Mar...$2.85/ft day winter rates (super posh ICW). Check Fort Lauderdale City docks, Las Olas on ICW $1.37 ft transient down to ~1.12 ft. Downtown and Cooleys Landing...still close to downtown. Both on New river.
If you want safe storage West of I-95 (56' clearance) $10-12 ft/month is possible, no liveaboard.
Isle of Venice and Hendricks Isle have some liveaboard spots guessing $8-900 month for your size.
Waterfront Times has dockage section. Mostly no liveaboard.
