a couple days in Bimini

I'm planning a trip from Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini next week. Any suggestions on where to stay? 51' Leopard power cat. a couple night stay, just wanting to shake down the boat. what's your favorite and why?

Re: a couple days in Bimini

I like Bimini Bluewater Resort. I usually am just checking in in Bimini so I'm looking for cheap. It's not fancy, but it's clean and they have fuel. The current runs pretty strong through the channel but their docks are out of the current which makes getting in and out much easier than some of the other marinas.

If you go all the way down the channel to the end there two areas where you can anchor that are well protected. You can tie your dinghy up at the casino.

The only one I have is (242) 347-3166, I don't know if that's the same one you have or not. I was last there in the middle of February.

We have also anchored to the west of North Bimini with easterlies blowing and anchored in Nixon Harbor off South Bimini. Personally we prefer anchoring out to a marina. Both ensure you'll have more privacy if you're not looking to go ashore.

Note that anchoring in the channel between the resorts is limited space with a tidal current that shifts every 6 hours or so. Not to mention a seaplane that may be taking off directly at you.

Re: a couple days in Bimini

stayed a few days last winter all the way at the end at the casino. also saw a few boats anchored just past. long narrow channel, skinny water each side. there is a check in office on the property; they are open late and want you to check in when you arrive; different dock people have different stories. some say ok to wait to am. customs people do not say this. ask where the office is and go over to see if you can raise anyone; think they said until 1000 pm. they are nice but firm and clear about what they want.

Bimini Sands. Floating docks. There was a Leopard 51 power cat there when we came thru in March. You can catch a wafer taxi over to North Bimini each day for a few bucks.

Bimini Sands Marina in summer is very hot and very buggy. Little breeze gets in to marina because of condo buildings. We were eaten alive by no see ums. Beautiful beach though.

Fair enough comment. We were plugged in and running air con at dock. Not sure what status of electric power is for Bimini now though, after power plant fire.

Anchor just west of the BTC tower. Excellent holding. Easy dinghy ride to customs and immigration. Easy docking of your dinghy right next to them.

Re: a couple days in Bimini

I stayed at Brown's Marina on June 14th, the first one on the left entering North Bimini. Nice docks, electric was fine (50 amp), tide runs thru strong, reasonable, great restaurant (Yellowtail Snapper, grilled). Will use again.
