Well, well!

I sail to the Bahamas for a few days and when I come back to shore, the board has changed to a new and improved version....?

Being flooded with e-mails about threads I "subscribed" too did not make my day.
Seems like the "pressure" is up on the site:
I keep seeing a message telling me I have not posted for a while and that I should take a few moments to ask a question or what not.
Some of my old postings have a double undeline that links to an advertisement....?

Understand that the site owner have to make a living somehow, but I sure miss the old small-town feeling.

I couldn't agree with you more CSY Man.

In a small town, you know just about everybody. In a city, you only know so many.

Just like it is for me living here in Phoenix, Arizona. Big city. Still growing. I hate it here. And it gets too damn hot in the summers here.

Which is why I'm moving back to California. Closer to the ocean. And do lot's of sailing!!

Everyone of us had that email notification problem, when this site switch over to the new version. Yeah, it sucks seeing advertising all around. Call it a sell out!!

Dumb Question On Recent Forum Upgrade

Whats the difference, and why is there a difference, between 'New Posts' and 'Today's Posts'?

If I reply to a post in 'New Posts' the thread disappears and the only way to get it to reappear is to go to 'Today's Posts'.

Thanks,

John

That's a very good question, jemsea.

The reason why when you replied to a thread that was under "New Posts". It removed that from the list. Meaning, that you have seen that thread!!

"Today Posts". Quite literally, means just that. Like for example. Today!! Whatever postings that are going on today. Will show up under "Today's Postings". Quite simple. And quite self explanatory!!

WHERE ARE ALL MY LOVELY PHOTOS?

All my lovely photos from Brazil and Norway have disappeared?
As sinbad7 I was probably the largest contributor to the photo gallery.
Is there any way you can retrive them or lost forever?

Thanks for pointing that out! I found the error in the link and everyone's photos should be showing up correctly now...

LINKS TO USEFUL MARITIME SITES?

Thanks for fixing the photo album problem, my photos are all there.
The alphabetical selection list still does not have my username sinbad7?

Just a suggestion. Would it be possible to set up an area of useful links of maritime nature?

Could have links to sites such as :

www.noonsite.com
World wide sailing directions

www.netpas.net
Needs downloading free program.
Sailing distances and info over 10.000 ports

www.xe.com/ucc/
Currency exchange rates

www.navcen.uscg.gov/mwv/navrules/rotr_online.htm
Rules of the road for navigators.

http://www.onlineconversion.com/
On-line conversion of just about everything.

etc. etc...

Forum members could submit their suggestions for acceptance of
other useful links.

With best regards
Tore Christiansen

I will setup a links section so we can all post useful links like the examples you have posted above. All moderators and admins will be able to edit the links as needed to make sure they meet our standards and stay on topic. It might take a couple of years but I bet in the end we will have one heck of an awesome links section that will be very handy...

You should see a drop down list labeled "image tools" just above and to the right of the image. If you pull that down you should see an option to delete your images...

I've not been able to get the site to remember my username even though I have cookies enabled everywhere. Any ideas?

Just my opinion, but the banner ads are terrible. Tonight I see opportunities to get a free ring tone for my cell phone. Wonderful. Hopefully some here have noticed that several of the more experienced sailors are here no more. I, myself, only stop in on occasion. Oh yeah, I love the little message that urges me to post something simply because I haven't posted in a while. IMO the Forum has lost the magic and replaced it with marketing. Too much technical and not enough salt. Hopefully a better balance can be found. If this is what the majority will accept, I'll be over on the "other" board. Stop by.

Capt Lar,

Well I apologize that the ads are not to your satisfaction. Is that all the concerns you? If the ads were gone do you think you would stay here? Which "other board" are you talking about?

I need as much info from you all so that I can make sure the site evolves based on your input. I never expected everyone to love the changes but I find it strange that a single ad can really alienate that many members.

Other members please speak up too. I need to hear all your input.

Thanks,

Andy

As I have mentioned before, there is overhead involved in running this, or any site. The ads, are, in my opinion, not too invasive, but it is a change towards commercialism that is new to this site. I agree that the changes make the feel of this forum different, but I see the need for change. I think, as members of this community we need to voice our concerns, and try to find solutions that will work for everyone. My concern with the new format is that it is not as intuitive as the old format. We have a number of members who are very computer savy. Maybe we could get some suggestions on how to improve that characteristic of the new format.
Andy, I do not think it is the specific ad that is an issue, but the invasiveness of the ads in general. There is one banner that has come up on occasion that locks up the whole page until you either click on it or refresh. This is the sort of issue that bugs me, and probably others. I am sorry to say I have not noted which ad it is, but if I catch it again I will send a PM.
Since, on this site, we have been able to discuss politics, express different opinions on boat size, material, and rig, and so many other hot issues while maintaining civility, I am very sure we can figure this out as well.
