Not Again

IMO the thread "Speed..." started by Don Lucas over in the Monohull Sailboats area, is a very interesting topic. This one... not so much.

Is it all going to start up again: CF is bad, no CF is good, no its bad, etc.
Gord did you gin this up just to drive more circular conversation and more traffic? No probably not, I'm just too cynical.

Anyway, you all enjoy!

Is there a lesson here?
The big problem is that the posts like the ones above by GordMay have been deleted without any trace.
Threads on CF are edited and formed to whatever the owners of CF point of view is desired.

How do you figure that ...king ?
The lines you quote have NOT been deleted without a trace (tho' perhaps they should have been, along /w this entire thread - mea culpa) - they remain unedited at post #1.

Is this code for "this thread is about to be closed"?

I sincerely hope not. Surely the one lesson we have learned in the past 8 years is that surrounding yourself with Yes Men is a recipe for trouble?

The basic fact remains,
many posts are deleted without mention to form a point of view supported by you or CF owners.

Any discussion about moderation of individual posts are not done publicly. It's not something the general membership is entitled to review as a group. If you ever have a question about any moderation of your posts send a PM to any Mod or Admin you like and it does not have to be the same mod that sent you the message. We don't mind discussing anything you have on your mind but we don't think your personal business needs to be done in public.

No and I agree that spam, rudeness, swearing, disrespect etc are totally unecessary, but what I don't understand is, if what all the mods have said here is true, that you want honest threads with honest and constructive replies, that you continue to condone lying, misrepresentation and blatent out and out marketing of products in the normal forum area which is against the forum rules.

It appears to me that there are double standards which is a shame because there is some good stuff on here, but it appears to be pi**ing a lot of people off, I see that there is now another forum set up in competition to this one by a lot of long standing members of this one.

I still see it there (I changed color to red to make it stand out. Blue words are mine.

This is intended to be a very brief, necessarily cursory, and incomplete history of the CruisersForum.

...
... Main body of post was here ...
...

CF reaches 18,493 members January 8, 2009.

“... And where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one!
When will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn?”

As far as posts being deleted, I have not seen or heard of any being deleted just for a viewpoint (may have, I am just not aware of any). The ones I am aware of were deleted for things clearly stated in the rules. As I have said before, sure, they are human and so the rules are enforced different by different mods. So, of course it will be somewhat uneven in application. But as a group, I think the mods do a good job.

Smoke and mirrors, threads are being manipulated to fit the forums needs. These words were not at the top of the original post.
Posts are constantly being deleted and changed.

You need to experience it before you see the light.

Say What?!?

Oy Veh! Well Gordo, you certainly seem to have stirred up a Shoot Storm to no good end, eh? Frankly, try as I might, I can’t fathom the point of your initial post unless it be an apologia for what some obviously feel to be moderator heavy handedness?

I/We have been nominal "members" of this Forum since early 2006, at which point there were (thankfully) relatively few participants and the discourses focused, helpful, certainly civil and the few disagreements not disagreeable. Since then, the Forum has expanded dramatically—per your initial post—as there is no mechanism of exclusivity nor a limiting franchise on Soap Boxes.

An unfortunate byproduct of unbridled expansion (although it may increase the number of “shows”, appealing to advertises and increasing ad revenues for the site owner) is that the BS Coefficient of a forum increases exponentially with nonexclusive membership gains. (While such BS may be generated by a fairly small proportion of participants, a small percentage of a large number is still a large number.) This wastes bandwidth, requires a fairly substantial moderation effort on the part of un- or under-appreciated volunteers; and, eventually, leads to disengagement by the more serious—and useful—participants; and, a “dumbing down” of content.

At this juncture, the BS Coefficient of the Forum seems to be approaching a limiting tolerance level—the point at which the trial of enduring BS exceeds the benefit of evermore infrequent gems of knowledge. And all the while the self-regulatory effect of candid, oft mistaken for “unkind”, repartee is (must be) “moderated” (out) in favor of the “civility” demanded by in an ever widening, but increasingly shallow, social/intellectual pool. Unpopular as it may be, the foregoing would seem to evidence the fact that social Darwinism does have its place although, as the 19th Century philosopher William James once observed: “As there is no worse lie than a truth misunderstood by those who hear it, so reasonable arguments, challenges to magnanimity, and appeals to sympathy or justice, are folly when we are dealing with human crocodiles and boa-constrictors.”

N’any case, as an alternative to expanding the BS Coefficient of the Forum to Unity, would one of you moderators kindly lock this thread?

FWIW…

s/v HyLyte,

Yes, the best option is to lock the thread. Problem solved.
(its always worked before)
