In fact the “advanced search” will allow you to search POC, and Vessel Name.

Ha! Thought I was making it up?

Just read about the FBI investigating a case of a 'desecrated' flag:

Re: Would you register a boat you bought abroad as a Canadian vessel

It is not easy and takes long. They are currently processing applications from feb 27 but I was told it is about to get crazy busy and times will triple. Need a deregistration, qualified personnel form, a few other forms I can’t remember. Bill of sale. Proof of checking out of last port of call. 4 photos of the boat. Not sure if the survey was required but I have it anyway. And it’s 250 dollars. On the plus side can all be done online.
I assume it would be similar requirements here in langkawi . Anyone try it?

Also what do you do with the boat while you wait? Can you sail?

Would you register a boat you bought abroad as a Canadian vessel

As Roland points out, the owner of the boat must be a qualified person, which for Canadian registration means resident in Canada.

If your boat is over 15m the Canadian tonnage survey requirements are outrageous, especially if you don’t have the lines drawing for the boat (that was our case - we gave up when the tonnage survey costs for our 16m catamaran were quoted over 10,000 CAD and registered in Jersey instead). If under 15m the tonnage survey is much simpler.

While you wait for the paperwork to be processed find out if they offer provisional registration, which allows you to clear out and in for a restricted period of time. Check if the countries your considering flagging with offer this. If you don’t leave the country and are not likely to be boarded to get your papers checked, no worries about sailing locally. Keep whatever registration paperwork you’ve got with you in case you do have to explain yourself.

Regarding the flag on your stern, your country’s flag may be emotionally important to you. But other than confusing other cruisers who think that you are from the country of your flag, officials don’t care. Boats are commonly skippered by people with passport different from registration country, and as long as the paperwork is correct no problem.

Are you sure it was 16M.. When we registered 3 years ago the cutoff for the tonnage survey was 12M. Did they change that and up the length?

Also, be careful here on CF. A few years back, there was a shiller that will try and convince you all Canadian boats need a tonnage survey no matter what (surprise he is a registered tonnage surveyer). He will even pester you by PM to offer his services.

When it comes to the tonnage survey, actually call and talk to the transport Canada people. They will direct you as to what needs to be done and the best way to do it. They are the people actually registering your boat and they not only know the rules, but enforce them.

Yup, we went through TC - it was a year ago. Our boat is a catamaran and IIRC if we had been under 15m the simplified tonnage survey would have been very basic owner-supplied length, breadth and depth. Over 15m meant a Lloyd’s Registered surveyor and full hull measurements.

As an expat Canadian it would have been nice to fly a Canadian flag, but now we have a UK Red Ensign and that’s quite OK too as the ‘mother’ country.

Good advice for the OP, refer to TC directly.

Actually that makes me happy. Ours is a catamaran as well and it was definately 12M when I registered. We registed as 11.95M and just did the simple self survey. If they upped it to 15M that is great news for new buyers. Tons of cats fall under 15M.

Sorry for you guys over 15M. However, down here in the Caribbean there are a few tonnage surveyers and we know friends that got it done for about $1500 including travel. Still sucks to pay that though.

It wasn’t the tonnage survey that was expensive - the quote we got in NZ was $2,300 NZ for a full set of measurements. The 10k CAD came from TC as they did not have a set of Outremer 55L lines and would be creating a full drawing set before accepting the tonnage survey. At that point we pulled the plug and went elsewhere. A warning to owners of custom or other low volume production boats.
