Re: Where is your Boat Registered?

Hi everyone,

I am bringing this post back up, because there is a question I have on this registry process, that I would very much like to know...
If you register your boat under a flag that is not your own nationality, how does it work with the skipper qualifications? Do they have to comply with your nationality... or do they have to comply with the boats flag?

Of course, I have a reason to ask this:
I have a 20nm limit in my Portuguese coastal licence...
Netherlands doesn't require any skipper qualifications to sailboats under 15mt..

So... if I register my boat under their flag, Do I need to keep the 20nm limit, or am I "free as a bird" from that moment on?

Re: Where is your Boat Registered?

Hi Messias!

As far as I, to sail on Portuguese waters you must have any accepted license. Since your license was issued by Portuguese laws, limits applies. Look to example (she had no license: Veleiro da holandesa de 16 anos foi escoltado até sair de águas portuguesas - PÚBLICO

I think you only avoid boat limits (Portuguese law boat classes). In other words, skipper is responsible to determine if boat has necessary conditions to sail in 5th or 1st class. In fact our class classification avoid crazy guys from use a 19 feet bow rider boat to sail from main land to Azores, from instance =)
