What Good Is a NJ Title ?

I paid off the loan.
I'm officially a Florida resident.
By boat is documented.
And I'm now registered in Florida (which doesn't require a title on documented vessels).

So, what good is this NJ title to me, if any, considering I'm never planning on moving back to NJ?

Update, in case anyone is interested.

According to the USCG Documentation office, a vessel may only be documented or state registered, not both. The way the rules are written, the title is null and void, and should be surrendered (or shredded).

Just another instance of state DMVs have no concept of what a documented vessel is, and being clueless about the laws. Either that or they're just trying to milk a few more dollars out of boaters for an invalid document, that's good for nothing except maybe wiping you ***.

Title has nothing to do with registration at all.

Title has to do with ownership, which IS required for documentation..

Oops! I meant documented or titled, not registered.

Title is not required for documentation. Many states, FL being one, actually have a clue what a documented vessel is, and don't require documented vessels to be titled.

Just received my documentation...the paperwork emphatically stated it should NOT be titled by a state.

Whether you need State Registration (not titling) is dependent upon the State's laws/rules. Florida and lots of others require that the boat should be "registered" in the State if the boat is being "used" in the State. Various States have various definitions of how long a boat needs to be "in the waters of the State" before "registration" is required.
- - However, if you are in a State that does not require registration for the boat to be used in that State's waters, then you may encounter problems when visiting or staying in another State. Lack of a State "decal" usually triggers a discussion about where your boat is "registered" and how long you have been in the new State. Usually each State wants some money for the privilege of "using their waters."
