What COLREG rule was broken here (video) - 2 ships collide in Suez Canal

Two cargo ships collide in the Suez Canal, and video of the whole incidence shows an incredible maneuver.

Let the debate begin who did what to whom and why. Guaranteed someone's service at sea career is done.

You arent supposed to bash into the ship in front of you. It's a rule.

Taking a wild guess here but I'll bet the larger black one realized he was running out of water and had to cut in front of the other to keep from running aground.

WTF????

I'm at a loss to understand this one! Maybe something personal between the skippers and a psychotic break? Simply weird...

Sure would like to understand the background chatter... might be revealing.

Blue ship @ fault under Rule 13.

If you watch the AIS transcript of this incident the blue ship came out of a container berth via separate channel and joined the main Suez Canal. The blue ship is overtaking the black one and is therefore in breach of Rule 13.

13. Overtaking
An overtaking vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. "Overtaking" means approaching another vessel at more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam, i.e., so that at night, the overtaking vessel would see only the stern light and neither of the sidelights of the vessel being overtaken.[6]

There also seems to be some speculation that the hydrolic stearing system of the overtaking vessel failed causing the hard turn to port.

The overtaking vessel is the blue ship! The hard turn to port by the black ship was probably caused by the interaction of the vessels being too close and sucking the black ship in.

or a really good explanation with diagrams here:

Re: What COLREG rule was broken here (video) - 2 ships collide in Suez Canal

If the black vessel is the stand on vessel in an overtaking situation (blue overtaking black) she should not have altered her course to port since she is obligated to maintain her course and speed. Rule 17.

If the black vessel is the overtaking vessel (black overtaking blue) then she must keep clear of the other vessel and should not have altered her course to port. Rule 13.

Either way black is at fault but the error seems so egregious I have to believe there was some sort of mechanical failure.

As I see it, the only way blue could be at fault would be if there is some sort of obstruction ahead (or known shallow water danger) that we can not see in the video and blue did not give black room to clear but that assumes that blue had room to alter her course to port to allow black to alter her course as well.

I think the local VTS will have a few questions to answer.... insert the Maersk ship into the convoy at the wrong time and speed and bad stuff is going to happen....

The video only shows 1/2 the story, here's the other 1/2….

So this looks like revenge by the black ship for being forced high by the blue ship when it entered the channel?

Maersk T (blue) is clearly not coming up from 22.5º abaft the beam of Colombo E (black), so not overtaking. The AIS picture is a bit disjointed as the Maersk reporting lags a bit, but before and after the point where it apparently stands still, it is clearly broad on the other's bow, suggesting a crossing situation. The Maersk T is still at fault, and it looks like the Colombo veered to stbd to avoid a collision early in the interaction - perhaps canal effect and shoals to stbd caused the sudden sheer to port.

That shows the vessel on port as overtaking, does it not?
