TSA and boat parts

My boat is in transit in the Dominican Republic, en route to St. Thomas.

I'm in the U.S. When I return to the boat I want to bring an injector pump and a lift pump for my boat's diesel engine.

Will TSA remove such items from my checked baggage?

Re: TSA and boat parts

I have taken many parts and pieces of boat equipment back to my boat in the Caribbean and to Europe (Croatia, and Turkey) in checked luggage. My approach has been to put a letter in the top of the checked bag with a copy of my ships documentation and a copy of my passport. I address it to both TSA, and the customs entity in the country I am landing in. In the letter I list the parts, state that they are for personal use and not resale, and state that they are allowed to be imported into the country without duty under the exemption of "stores and equipment is free of duty for US Documented Vessels in transit" per the "International Law of the Sea" treaty which most countries are signers off. I have been questioned once by Customs and had the bags inspected by TSA several times but had no problems. Make sure there are no prohibited materials or substances in the parts.

Thank you for the reply.

Good idea to include a letter in the top of the checked bag, explaining matters, along with copies of passport, USCG Documentation, etc. I will do that.

Re: TSA and boat parts

TSA and Customs are quite different functions. Check the TSA regs online, there isn't much in the line of boat gear that you can't transport in checked baggage. Hazmat is the primary issue. Carry-on baggage is of course more restrictive. Customs is variable depending upon your destination. I've brought in all sorts of boat gear - water maker, wind turbine, 70# anchor etc. in checked baggage to Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. I make it easy for Customs by putting a printed inventory in each bag, categorizing each item as personal, safety, sporting goods, tools etc. I keep my invoices separate just in case duty is levied. I have handy my Yacht Documentation, Cruising Permit, Marina info etc. My experience is that Customs will prefer to talk to you than to read your letters.

Don't pack any parts in jam. TSA will confiscate them.
