I think many of us react negatively to folks who ask what they can get away with rather than what is the right thing to do. Clearly the right thing to do is to deal with this debt - at some point he will have to so best to just face the music. Dealing with it may be getting legal aid and challenging it rather than paying it. But trying to ignore/avoid dealing with something as serious as this is not something that will garner much respect among a lot of responsible yacht owners. Please note that I didn't say anything about the source of the debt or whether it is fair - I don't care. Rationalize away, but the truth is that there is a legal obligation so either pay up or challenge it in court. Putting energy into trying to work around it instead doesn't cut it.

That was easy!!!

Most countries require the passport to be valid for at least 6 months before entering their borders, which his wasn't. If, however, you get checked and are already in the country, you should be OK but might get a reprimand. You might also be required to show that you will be leaving before the passport expires.

Glad the BIL made it OK and had a good time, but I think both of you (OP and him) were pretty naive. Him, thinking it OK to travel like that, and you thinking you wouldn't attract trolls when stating lack of child support as a reason for not having a passport.

Onno, I hope you only poorly expressed your self when you seemed to say that people who expressed their support of the principle of child support as "trolls".

<Troll mode>

Ever hear of something called Tor Project? Silk Road? BitCoins?

Would you like to be EU or Cuban, or maybe Chinese? just buy a passport.

</Troll mode>

If you're dumb enough to sail off with no passport because you can't get one because of legal problems, you're probably dumb enough to sail off with a fake passport. A little digging into the electronic underworld and you can be Hugh Hefner, or at least have a passport that says that you are, even if you haven't the money or the girls.

The law preventing him from getting a passport was written well. He should stay ashore, get a job and pay his back support first. I have no sympathy for deadbeat dads. Children deserve better. I would not go cruising with someone with his kind of ethics. I know that sounds harsh but not when viewed from his child's point of view.
I suspect that you have never been in a messy child support situation. It's not black and white and it's strongly biased in favor of the female.

That said, I still think the whole story is fictional.
