Taking portable AIS / Handheld VHF on Flight

Hello all,

As long as they are packaged up so they can't activate + the VHF's battery is out am I good taking these on an international flight? Should I let them know during checkin?

On several international flights I've carried various handheld VHF and satphone radios and other strange-looking electronics gear in my carry-on. Usually there's not a question. They often do pull the bag off the conveyor and do a "look inside the bag" inspection, but they always have let me through. One time I got in a friendly conversation with the inspector about navigation electronics and sailing.

I didn't bother pulling the batteries out of the handhelds.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I've carried both in the past, never been a problem. If in doubt, check with airline first.

I've never had a problem either. Carrying on a PFD with a cartridge, however, has been more hit and miss. I flew back from USVIs via Philadelphia back to Toronto; the USVIs said nothing, but at the changeover in Philly, the mall cops unscrewed and dumped the inflation cartridge.

So if you take your own PFD, consider whether there's a supplier of your cartridge where you'll land, or if you can forward one under separate cover.

I used to export aircraft which meant I was flying back with aircraft VHF radios, Satphone, transponder and a couple of portable GPS's in my carry on. Usually had to explain why I had aircraft communication and navigation gear, but never really had any issues.
There is a size limit on LiPO batteries, but I'm sure you are under that.
