Yes, read the later posts. My comment was intended to be a comment on BoatUS's lack of clarity.

It should have read something like: "While federally documented vessels are not permitted to display state..."

Why are some people quoting Boat US? They are not the source and definitely not the USCG.

As for the Square stickers showing proof that you are currently in compliance with state registration, these numbers are NOT identification no's. for your vessel.

Tell ya what. Don't put on the state sticker and if you get pulled over, make sure you quote Boat US. Then let us know how it turned out.

In Virginia if your Federally documented you cannot get state registration and you wont get a state tax sticker but you will get a tax bill. They will give you a sticker if you wish.

Or,one may do what John Kerry did with his brand new New Zealand made $7 mil sloop-just berth it in Rhode Island and avoid taxes all together.This because it seems Rhode Island has changed its laws about USCG documented vessels with home ports there.
