Saltaire or Scottish Lion Rampant or ?

As a Scottish born ex-pat I am contemplating switching my yacht registry to UK so that I can proudly fly the flag but the question is…which flag is correct?

Home port would be in Scotland.
British small yacht registry

I know the St. Andrews Cross is also a nautical code flag and should only be flown when not moving, but what do other proud Scots fly when cruising internationally?….

The Red Ensign?

I've come across a couple of cruising Scots. They flew the Red Ensign, and and an even larger Cross of St. Andrew off the spreader while anchored.

Red , White or Blue Ensign

Scotland is not a Maritime nation, nor England or Wales, as such it does not have a recognised national ensign. Scotland is, however, a part of Great Britain and should fly the Red, White or Blue ensign.

The purpose of the ensign is to show which countries law you apply onboard your vessel. The law will be those of the country of registry.
I am English and would like to fly the national flag however I am bound by law as are you. I fly the Red Ensign with great Pride as it is made up of all the flags of Great Britain.

Fly the National flag of your Great Country from the Starboard Flag Haliard and do so with pride.

Wink

I fully the understand your need to note your ancestry. As has been previously stated Small Ship registry is UK and with only a few expections you must use the red ensign.

I decided to add the Saltaire to the bow.Subtle but sexy...Like its owner. Actually there is not many other alternatives...However,
I was back in Scotland last June and watch a boat beat out
of the Sound of Sleet and it had a tartan pennant... presumingly his clan and years ago there were quite a few flying their Clan Flag. The latter will be easily purchased, the former will need a little research.

Anyway...Now we know where your articulate pragmatism is sourced...

Regards

Alan

Thanks Alan,

Nice ideas and nice touch on your bow.

I am a MacDuff so perhaps the crest on my bow spirit is the thing.
