You can access a NOAA copy of the United States Coast Guard's (USCG) vessel data base and extract vessel characteristic, documentation, and ownership data. Is this the kind of search you're looking for?

As a civilian I'm not sure it's legal to find/contact the owners of a state registered vessel. But if you have a problem with a boat owner the local Harbor Patrol has access to the info.

I live in GA and I picked up an abandoned boat. In order to get a clean title I had to go through several steps to locate the owner. At one point I looked on the GA DNR web site and found a spreadsheet listing boats and the location they are registered at. I sorted by serial number then by registration number. Never did find a current registered owner but that was as close to a reverse look up that I've found.

That's for documented boats only.

"Numbers" are for state registrationand while some states might keep a public database, I don't think it's very common.

In our small (boat-wise) state, the last two alphabet letters tell the location or office where the boat was first registered.

If you can get up really close to the boat's transom, you may be able to see the hull identification number, though that may not be of any special value to you.

After a small boating mishap, leaving a note type of thing, I reported it to the water patrol, they looked up the registrtion and gave me the name and ddress so I could contact the owner concerning the mishap. It was no on the water, but the parking lot....maybe they weren't supposed to do that, don't know. All ended well.

I am certain this is considered private information by most states. For a State registered boat with letters and numbers on the bow, try going to the Department of Motor Vehicles and ask. I think that if you have a legitimate enough reason they can look up the registered owner for you.

It is privet information in Washington State...

The DOL will not even tell you which vehicles you have registered in your own name with out the Licence No# of each vehicle and your Photo ID.

I could not remember the WN number of the Sea Ray one year and they were not allowed to look it up and tell me....I had to go back home find the number myself and return along with showing my Photo ID to prove I had access to the information.

Federally documented boats are public information....Name of boat and state of registry is stated but I don't think any personal contact info is.

Google the name and you can easily get phone and lots of other stuff.

I'm trying to find history of a boat built in 89, last owner won't reply, no registration numbers, has a name but NOAA doesn't go back more than 180days past expiration? If I read the caveats correctly. ?.? Is documentation by name require annual fees be paid?

US Coast Guard documented vessels need periodic renewal, but if I recall that is no-fee/free (at least now) after the vessel has been documented initially by the owner (or transferred by the new owner).

State registration in the USA varies; some are on two- or three-year renewal cycles.

If you know anyone associated with the boat, such as a marina, mechanic, insurance co., etc., they might have some info.

If the boat was state registered, and some information is missing, you might be able to post a bond, file affidavits, etc., to get registered.

If the boat was documented, you might actually be able to talk to one of the USCG documentation folks in W VA and get suggestions.
