Register a dinghy while cruising USA

We are cruising down the east coast of USA on an extended voyage to Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean. Normally based in NY and our sailing boat is registered in NY. We recently bought a Honda 2.5 for our dinghy, not unpacked yet. Before we had no outboard and had no need to register the dinghy. What do we do now? Most States say 90 days if registered in another State. Does this mean as soon as we put the engine on we have to go to the DMV of whatever state we are in and register? We will not be in any state for more that 90 days except perhaps Florida. Any thoughts or pointers anyone?

Every state is different. You are going to have to check the laws for every state that you expect to spend any significant amount of time in.

As to Florida, if you are here more than 90 days then you will have to register both your boat and your dinghy (assuming the dinghy has the engine mounted by then). The registration fees are quite modest.
