Private Flags and Your National Ensign
Anyone have a private flag? Anyone pro- or anti-private flag out there? And why? Why not spend a bit of $$ and act like a Rockefeller (he had a private flag?) or whoever? And it seems like few fly their national ensign. Why not?

I saw a guy on a three wheeled reclining bike flying a flag that was huge, multicolored, hand embroidered, and bird shaped in New Orleans. It was fabulous.

Why not? There is a small group of us who want to fly our own custom made flags on our boats. They say, "Our Damn Yacht Club"...."Just Because We Can"

It would be fun working on your own ensign. Mine would have to integrate a guitar with a mug of beer somehow; throw in some mountains reaching down to the sea; a fish jumping on the end of a fly line; fit a sailboat into that somehow and I think that would cover it.

It's not an uncommon practice among larger racing boats to have a "battle flag" that gets flown from the the headfoil when the boat motors out to the race. The insignia on the battle flag is usually the same graphic that adorns the spinnaker.

You won't see beer on a serious race boat, at least not at the highest levels. That's the whole reason that fun races were originally called "beer can" races. Those are the races where the crew is allowed to have beer on board.

I assume by "private flag" you mean something hoisted on the port spreader halyard, say, and not in place of a burgee or signal flag or courtesy flag on the starboard.
Yeah, I fly my ensign every trip and remove it at sunset.

In traditional yachting, it's actually called a "private signal." Traditionally, the private signal is swallowtailed, and flown in place of an officer's flag. In yacht club etiquette, you would never fly a flag of office at that same time as a private signal.

Well, depends much on your general attitude to flags, coats of arms and anthems ...
I do not feel like flags add anything to my sailing. But I am aware there are others that do care. To each their own.

I fly my boat name flag at the bow pulpit, a US courtesy flag on the starboard bow rail, which is covered when not required, and a yatch club flag on the port bow rail. (all 12 x 24)
I also fly a canadian flag at the stern that is 30 x 60.
Adds a bit of color, they are the only items that are not white or black on my boat...
