one way ticket to mexico?

I will be travelling from San Diego with my three year old son to Mexico to meet my husband who is sailing our boat from the USVI to Cancun area. Am I going to have a problem entering Mexico (specifically Cancun) with one-way tickets?

We (all three of us) will eventually be leaving Mexico in late spring.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Re: one way ticket to mexico?

What worked for me when I had crew flying in to meet me was to send each one a letter addressed "To Whom It May Concern", stating that they would be coming on board as crew and that I, as master of the boat, would be responsible for housing them while in-country and for clearing them out of the country when we departed. Include the approximate date of departure, the marina or other place where the boat will be located when they arrive, and the name and documentation number of the boat. The airline will likely be interested in why you have a one-way ticket also, as they would be responsible for flying you back to your origin if Mexico refuses entry.

I would suggest you check with the Embassy on that AND get a letter from the boat owner (husband) stating that you'll be joining the boat and departing the country as crew on said boat.
I got held up for two days at Gatwick Airport by the Dept of Homeland Security on a flight to Nth Palm Beach to pick up a delivery.. as the Agent would not accept e-mails as proof.. it was not until a Nth PB local sheriff sent confirmation of boats existence and we were joining it that we were allowed to fly..
Seeing the fuss that's been generated I'd play safe.. or do what I usually do.. buy a refundable return and cancel after arriving..

There used to be a problem with one parent taking minors to Mexico without the other parent's notarized permission--you might want to talk to the airline.

Re: one way ticket to mexico?

This may have changed, but for business trips (not necessarily to Mexico, we often found it was cheaper to buy a round trip and cash in the unused half. Can you still do that if you buy the right kind of ticket ?
