Coops; I think you could shorten the title of this thread to "Making Wild Claims"

Many claims about who said what, did or didn't do what, thought what and believed what have proved to be wrong.

Re: New Zealand Immigration Officer Making Wild Claims

"If Kiwi taxpayers think saving sailors' lives costs them too much, then Kiwi taxpayer should ask his representative to write a bill which asks for NZ to reject the conventions they signed some time ago. That's that."

Just consider this a pre-emptive rescue.

Your logic is just silly. The authorities are doing the responsible & moral thing (both running a rescue service and stopping this guy). Are you going to suggest, they recommend people head out in open row boats...because, heck we already pay for the rescue service anyway?

This is equivilent of the fire department mandating fire detectors and elimination of fire hazards...or would you suggest they just like to pull burnt bodies out of flaming wreckage?

Thank God for America, where we can be stupid and get killed if we wish, without government permission.
I can set out in a leaky oil drum with a broom as a sail if i should wish!
Things like this remind me how free we are relative to other countries.

Just as an analogy to this thread topic, in discussions with two different crews over cockpit drinks on our European travels these Europeans felt strongly that the government should step in and regulate the weight of their citizens. These folks said that such a law would save lives but mostly the overweights were costing everyone else lots of money because they used the free health care systems excessively. These folks were absolutely serious about this.

I guess why stop trying to reduce search and rescue costs by mandating some arbitrary hull safety levels. We can all realize savings by controlling other costly behaviors too.

Of course, and also since obesity costs the health system billions, let's mandate strict diets for everyone.

Ummm... hate to point out the obvious, but if you overstay your visa in the US you're going to be locked up rather than sailing anywhere.

Do you mean like the guy who hands you a ticket if you don't wear your seatbelt?

Or the fire marshall, who shuts down your buisness if you don't have fire detectors?

Or the bank that won't give you a mortgage if your deck doesn't have railings?

And what about the poop patrols on the water?

I suspect the only reason we don't have similar rules here is because we are less nautically oriented and there are bigger fish to fry, so our activities on the water tend to fly under the radar to a large degree.

Why Scoobert, I guess that you don't know that the USCG has the power to terminate a voyage in a vessel that is manifestly unsuited to the task... and occasionally does invoke that power.

I would be very surprised if in "the land of the free" that there was not a law (or 10!) that already covered this eventuality. and even if not, when you sailed past some floating paramilitaries they would find a reason........Probably summit to do with terrorism . or vaginas .

I think it's great the US posters on here seem to hate NZ so much. Your forefathers enjoyed our hospitality though. They were welcome.

Hey, wait a minute. Not all Americans are selfish jerks. Just some of us.

Yes, the huddled masses here in the States yearn for a land that is free, where we can drive on Freeways without seatbelts and have someone else pay our medical bills when we go through the windshield, where we can run our businesses knowing if it catches on fire none of our customers will know until the flames break out (giving them more time to shop), where banks give mortgages without strings and where we can poop where ever we want, including in the lake in front of your house! This is what we fought our Revolution over, AND WE SHALL NOT BE DENIED!!
