Additional regulations are absolutely not merited. Do you think any one of the drunk poeple on board the overloaded, unlicensed boat that collided with the fishing vessel had the slightest clue about the regulations already in place? If the boat had been following existing regulations the crash wouldn't have happened. Introducing additional regulations will just be additional pain in the ass for sober people who do try to conform to the regulations and additional expenditure of taxpayers money. You cannot regulate against stupid, ignorant or drunk.

I'm like all of us and hate regulations. Think it must a sailor thing.

But sorry to say I'd disagree on one thing, as I do think these deaths may well have been avoided were there some form of qualified licensing.

If a test or course had taught this skipper some concept of responsibility .....or if he'd failed to secure a license in the first place and not been able to take the boat out.....or simply learnt more about the risks and not done it..........this kid could have lived.

IMHO if you judge one life v no licensing, then the 'no licensing' looses.

He stole the boat! It seems now he may or may not have been driving the boat. One of the drunk un named ******** was in "control".

As a professional fisherman I fairly froth at the mouth every time there is mention of the professional fisherman involved who was on his way to work. The "media" certainly gave him a bad rap. Some how he was supposed to have avoided this high speed, overloaded stolen vessel.

Still waiting to hear if charges are to be laid.

I hold a Masters class 5 as I'm sure the other fisherman does. Does not stop idiots from running into you.

Can't legislate against stupidity, unfortunately often the innocent are caught up in the actions of the stupid.
But additional regulations do make for good political careers and good media coverage.

There is already a qualification based boat licence requirement in New South Wales - any person who drives a recreational powered vessel at a speed of 10 knots or more must hold a boat driver’s licence (and for a PWC at any speed a PWC licence is required).

A minor technical point - new regs in NSW does not equate to new regs in Australia. Though I have no doubt the lunatics in most states will want to follow suit.
