Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

Trying to get that boat registered in Washington and apparently my surveyor copied down an incomplete HIN for our boat. I only have 11 characters and boat should have 12 after 1972. The transom has been painted at least twice and the characters are very difficult to read.

I know that our boat was first registered in early 1974 and built in 1973. I can kinda make out the most of the HIN and I think goes something like:

CCY 35217 A073.

However, I'm not sure on the letter 'A' the HIN. There were two formats in the 12 letter post 1972 world... one with letters for month and another with numbers.

Does know that in the mid 70's era of C&C (made in Canada) if they used a letter for month or number?

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

In the case of the 12 character HIN, the last four digits are a straight date code for month and year the hull came out of the mold.
An alternate method featured the last 4 characters always beginning with “M” (not 'A') and ending with a letter code, indicating year, as follows.
AUG - A FEB - G
SEP - B MAR - H
OCT - C APR - I
NOV - D MAY - J
DEC - E JUN - K
JAN - F JUL - L

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

Gord's got it, except that the letter code indicates month, not year (fingers ahead of mind I'm sure, happens to me all the time). M##? -> M73C. This is the "model year" format (hence the 'M') - note that the months start with A = August as the "model year" was assumed similar to cars with new models coming out at that time of year.

The code A073 looks like a post 1984 code, as that has a month letter, but then the digit should be the model year and then the build year and 0 is too far from 3 to make sense.

As a pre-84 HIN the only thing that makes sense (if the HIN followed guidelines, and not all did that early in the process, especially outside the US) is 1073. There's only one month where the second digit is a zero, and that's October.

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

Found one reference that shows C&C, with the CCY code, did something that looked like this:

CCY|35|217|10|73

It's all numbers, but they added a vertical pipe that looks a lot like a '1' between the factory designator, model, serial number, month, and year. Any chance yours is built like that? Once you pull out the separators this one becomes CCY302850574, but that would be pretty hard to make out after several coats of paint especially with all the extra dividers.

Didn't they do something like put the HIN on in two places, one on the transom and the location of the other known only by the Coast Guard.....?

Not sure if this helps, but my 1982 C&C 27 had HIN:

ZCC 27 933 M82B

(the spaces are my doing, it is all one big number on the boat).
Clearly the model is 27, hull number 933, built in 82. Apparently the M format.

CCY is the Rhode Island plant
ZCC is the Niagara on the Lake plant.

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

Folks--

I appreciate the help and apologies for the delay in response, but the story got better. Since all good stories start with Once Upon a Time...

Once Upon a time, there was a marine surveyor... and not a very good marine surveyor. During the purchase inspection I repeatingly asked him to check the mast step on the 40 year old C&C 35, he did a superficial poking and said it was fine, not even removing the cover. Later when I had the mast pulled to add conduit... the mast step was broke in two and wood underneath it was compressed and total fix cost many boat units. It was not the only mistake, the additional ones become a much longer story best told with alcohol.

Well apparently he can't copy a HIN from the old survey I provided him to help write the most current survey. The old survey had all 12 characters and with some elbow grease and care I got a reasonable rubbing off the transom.

When I updated the CG documentation, i didn't notice the previous owner docs had a blank field for the HIN. When I gave the CG's NVDC the new CG-1258, I used the surveyor mangled 11 digit version. Since that is now the "official" record for the boat, Washington State won't register even with the rubbing.

Today we just mailed a new CG-1258 to "exchange" (along with $84) and add that extra character in to the right spot of the HIN to make Washington happy. BTW, Oregon State didn't care and so we just renewed Oregon to keep a current registration.

Since it was a rubbing, I needed to mail it since the scan would not come out clear. So NVDC will get it next week and the looking at the website, it will take about 7 weeks to get a 1258 exchange processed. Then back to Washington folks to see about getting it registered.

I keep telling myself that "this is a game of inches". Grrrrrrrrr

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

I need help. It would seem that my boat has been sold three times with the wrong Hull ID or the original purchaser bought it and their was some other documentation. The boat is supposed to be a 1974 C&C 35 mark 2 and it is exactly as that year should be but on the hull id it ends in 73 but all the bills of sale for the boat end in 74. It was built in October... anyone know where in the boat their might be another placard with the currently used numbers...

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Hazer.

That's fairly common.
The hull was laid in (October) 1973, but the boat was completed and/or sold in 1974.

The HULL identification number (ending in 1973) is correct, as is the Bill of Sale (dated 1974).

This might be a redundant question, but why are you attempting to state register what appears to be a federally documented boat? Its usually one or the other, not both.

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

The previous owner died on the boat and the children that sold me the boat were far removed out west. I never got that paperwork but it does have that placard in the locker. Is there a good place to start looking for that document? Thank you for shedding light.

Both Oregon and Washington require you to register the boat.
Oregon decals go on stern quarter,Wahington decals go on bow end. With both no numbers but must have decal.

Re: Need help on 1974 C&C 35 HIN format

The Hull ID number on a 74 C&C 35 mkII is located on the upper Starboard of the Transom. Should start with CCY

Thanks,
Ron
